WHAT IS PBL?

St Joseph’s Primary School has adopted a Whole School Approach to bring about positive behaviour; Positive Behaviour for Learning [PBL]. This approach has a strong emphasis on teaching appropriate behaviours and providing systems of support to bring about these positive behaviours.

PBL is focused on proactive strategies for defining, teaching, and supporting appropriate student behaviours to create a positive school environment. The aim of Positive Behaviour Support is to actively teach and reinforce desired behaviour while implementing consistent, reasonable, mostly positive intervention to address challenging behaviours. Preserving
and building child’s self esteem and image as well as encouraging self monitoring of behaviour are vital components of the positive approach.

HOW DO WE IMPLEMENT THIS FRAMEWORK?

There is an emphasis on the three core Key Expectations – I am Safe, Respectful and Responsible - in the classroom as well as the playground. Teachers teach a series of lessons focused at appropriate and expected classroom behaviour. Lessons may involve role plays, discussions, visual and hands on activities.

For example, a copy of the Behavioural Expectations for the classroom is outlined below. These expectations form part of our whole school rules and expectations. Teachers refer to this detailed matrix to plan lessons and activities to assist in reinforcing our PBL expectations. The detailed matrix can be obtained from your classroom teacher if you would like further clarification with any particular area.
