Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to Week 8!
Sunday, 27th November was the first Sunday of Advent. The Season of Advent affords us an opportunity to prepare for the celebration of the birth of Our Lord at Christmas; we do this with anticipation and joy!
Children's University
Congratulations to all our Children’s University graduates who celebrated their graduation last Wednesday at Newcastle University. Thank you to our Mr Chandler who introduced this initiative to SJKB.
Year 5 Leadership
Well done to our Year 5 children who have prepared and presented their leadership speeches on Monday and Tuesday this week. Their ability to speak confidently and articulate why they would make excellent 2023 school leaders was very impressive. It’s going to be a very close voting process. Due to the larger number of girls compared to boys I will be able to confirm the breakdown of boys and girls ratio for our school leaders in the near future. There will obviously be more girls in leadership roles than boys.
School Gardening
Thank you to Cheryl H (P&F President), her friend and Luke C for our weeding and mulching day. Any more parents are welcome to join in the fun, we are organising a whole school mulching day on Thursday 15th December and an out of uniform day! The children will be invited to help out spreading the mulch through our internal garden beds at school. However I believe Cheryl and Luke will be back in before this day. Please contact me if you would like more information.
St Paul's College Booragul
Today our Years 5 & 6 children will attend St Paul’s College, Booragul for their Creative and Practical Arts Showcase. A note was sent home last week for permission.
Virtual Academy
Congratulations to Sienna G (year 6) who is involved in the Gifted Education program at SJKB in the Virtual Academy. Sienna has designed and can articulate the functions of the saddle to allow those with disabilities to experience life experiences that we may take for granted. Very inspirational Sienna and I really appreciated your presentation referring to your family who are always helping others and you want to do the same! Well done!
Jingle & Mingle
Our Jingle & Mingle carols night will be on tomorrow, Friday, 2 December commencing at 5.30pm. Dinner (pre-ordered sausage sizzle) will be available from 5pm onwards until 6pm. The children will be presenting their item from 6-6.30pm and the Band will be entertaining us in between. We will also have a special visitor (shhhhhhh) wearing a big red suit (fingers crossed) between 5.30pm-6pm at the photo booth. Limited amount of soft drinks ($2 each) will be available. This event is a joint school and parish organised night. An information flyer went home last Monday for further details.
All classes will be performing at least one Christmas song and we have a band organised to entertain us also.
Christmas Cards
The children created beautiful Christmas cards this year. Well done!
Retirement of Fr Geoff Mulhearn
In 2023, the Lakes region, including SJKB will be contacting sporting clinics such as the AFL below to be connected with local community sport and participate in their gala days including netball, cricket, soccer, AFL etc.
End of Year Excursion: K-5 (reminder)
A reminder that I have reserved tickets to the production of “Who Stole Christmas?” based on the Grinch story, at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium as a Christmas end of year treat for K-5. Year 6 will be at their beach fun day that day on December 8. The show starts at 10am and will finish near 12pm. Children will return to school in time for lunch.
McDonald's Family Fundraiser
If you are purchasing dinner from McDonald's on Tuesday 13th December, please note that a percentage of sales between 6 - 7pm will be paid to our school and then donated to the "Make a Wish Foundation". The Foundation is currently making one of our school families wishes come true! Consider supporting this fundraiser. Thank you!

What a year it has been!! So many wonderful moments throughout 2022. We have almost made it through the 2022 school year.
I just wanted to thank you all for your support this year in the Pastoral Care space. I have had the privilege to meet and work with some amazing students and families this year. I am excited for what 2023 will hold.
CLASS PARENTS- A big thank you to our Class Parent Network- Cheryl, Alesha, Kylie, Jenni, Jenna, Gillian, Angie, Hannah, Sarah and Somone, for your support and assistance this year with your class teacher and the families in your class. It so greatly appreciated.
Wishing all the year 6 students and their families a wonderful last couple of weeks as “Primary” students and wishing you a happy transition into High School. May this time be exciting and full of amazing moments for you all. Such a bittersweet time for parents. Enjoy the ride!
To any families that are leaving the SJKB community, I wish you well as you embark on your next chapter.
Please take care over the break and look after one another. Remember, self-care for you and the family. Self-care is anything you do to take care of yourself so you can stay physically, mentally, and emotionally well. Its benefits are better physical, mental, and emotional health and well-being. Self-care can look different for everyone, but to count as self-care, the behaviour should promote health and happiness for you.
I want to wish you all a blessed, wonderful, and safe Christmas, and very happy and restful holiday break.
Take Care

SORA
A reminder that Sora St Joseph’s has a subscription to SORA. Sora is an eBook and audio book Library. As part of the Australian Catholic Education Network (ACEN) member collection, your child can access eBooks and audio books through the Maitland Newcastle Diocese. All you need to do is to download the SORA app or go to the website and sign in through the ACEN membership, then you and your child can enjoy some terrific books on your devices at home. One of the great features of SORA is the inclusion of Graphic novels, Fiction and Non-Fiction books. Log in and explore today! Students can continue borrowing books through SORA during the holidays.

A huge thank you to all of the families who answered our call for donations! We were so pleased with the response. We still need larger sizes (Size 12 - 16) if you have any at home.
The new format of our pre-loved uniform shop continues with items of clothing presented in a much easier way for purchase. New prices are:
- All “good quality” clothing - $5 a piece, except sports jackets, which are $10.
- All “ok quality” clothing is still a gold coin donation.
Of course we will always look after those families who need it the most.
DONATIONS ARE GRATEFULLY RECEIVED, so please check through your child's uniforms to see whether they are growing out of them and send surplus ones in to the school office (on carline drop off is fine). We particularly need larger sizes of good quality uniforms e.g. 12, 14, and 16. Thank you! A Lowes pricelist is attached to remind you of the cost of new uniforms. It's a reminder that PLUS runs a very cost effective service that supports our school.
To make credit card payment for your items, please download the Commonwealth Bank Qkr app (see school office staff for details) and choose
P & F - PLUS - Pre-loved Uniform Shop + New Hats
and type in the total amount for the items you are purchasing
A reminder there are two suppliers for new school uniforms, particularly as the children are in their winter uniforms now:
> Verdun Hiles have stocked St Joseph's uniforms since the school's beginning.
They carry a full range of stock except girls' shorts (they haven’t got the girls shorts in yet as they are awaiting a sample). The majority of their items are Australian made, resulting in a top quality finish. Also a good option when Lowes are out of stock.
> Call in and check it out. They also stock the same colour but thicker winter stock of girls pants than the Lowes brand. So if you want to support local, you have the choice.
> See Val at Verdun Hiles
> 88 The Boulevarde Toronto
> Ph 02 49591258
Also Lowes Glendale stock a full range. Some sizes go out of stock from time to time but we wanted to let you know that you may be able to get it at Verdun Hiles instead.
Lowes, Stockland Glendale - 20% off next thursday and Friday 4 and 5 August.

Phone 02 4956 8570
If you're looking for a particular uniform item, please try us first as sometimes we’ve had items with the price tags still attached. Please email direct to the P & F Volunteers on joeyspandf@hotmail.com or the school office admin@kilabenbay.catholic.edu.au and we will pass on your message PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR CHILD'S NAME AND CLASS in the message as our volunteers do not have access to the different family surnames to make connections to students - therefore please use your child's name as well as your name.
Thank you!

We have a number of students who have life threatening anaphylactic allergic reactions to all nuts and eggs. We would like to encourage families NOT to send these food items to school with their children or to ask their children to tell their teacher if they have brought them, so that they can be eaten away from affected children. We also encourage children NOT to share food at school.
