Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to Term 4, Week 2!
Term 4 is always a special term for many reasons. For some, it’s the final year of primary school, for some it is getting ready to transition from infants school to the primary grades, for some it is the excitement of Christmas, for some it is looking forward to some warmer weather! No matter what you are looking forward to, trust me, it’s on its way! There has been excitement in the air these last couple of weeks embracing change and looking toward brighter days.
Kindergarten 2023 Transition
Our Kindergarten transition program is continuing, the children are having a great time getting to know each other and familiarising themselves with their schooling environment. We do still have enrolment spots available for families wishing to enrol their child in 2023. Please let your friends, families and neighbours know that it’s not too late to enrol at St Joseph’s.
HSC Good Wishes
Good luck to all our alumni students who have been recently sitting their HSC exams. I am sending all our blessings to you all for a calm and fruitful experience, including the families of the students too!
School Improvements
We are currently awaiting new furniture throughout the school (tables and chairs) which will arrive for the start of the school year in 2023, a new library flexible furniture arrangement, new playground equipment for shade to complement what we had built/installed recently, new student laptops, our school foyer has had a little makeover as will our Kindergarten toilets and breakout room, new carpet in the Kindergarten rooms and Year 5/6 rooms and hopefully a little landscaping at the front of the school/carpark and a splash of paint within the classrooms. We are currently having all our verandah poles within the school grounds rectified and our undercover walkways rebuilt with new guttering and side boards. This will be a 6 week long project. Therefore I do ask for your patience if there are any truck deliveries during drop off and pick up times, however I have been assured this will not happen during these times. The workers will be occupying the 6 car spots near our skip bins at the top corner of the carpark.
Parents and Friends Association
The P&F have also organised for the canteen kitchen bench to be upgraded and has a wish list for some new sporting equipment. Here is a photo of the new benchtop in the canteen:
Cans 4 Courts
Our wonderful P & F Association have now been able to count all the money from the very successful Parents Fun Night. They are happy to announce a whopping $8,045.50 was raised!! Thank you to everyone who attended the night and supported in many other ways by donating prizes and buying raffle tickets. A big community effort!
Term 4 Disco - Save the Date
Thursday 17th November will be the final disco for the year. Tickets available on Qkr. Flyer will be sent out soon.
Stuck on You - Clothing and Item Labels Fundraiser
This is a great idea for labeling all of your child/ren's items brought to school or other places and they will never be lost! See flyer below for more details.
ICAS
Congratulations to the following children who participated in ICAS assessments last term:
Digital Technologies – Aidan M (Year 4) Credit, Lisa K (Year 5) Participation

End of Year Excursion: K-5
I have reserved tickets to the production of “Who Stole Christmas?” based on the Grinch story, at Hunter Ice Skating Stadium as a Christmas end of year treat for K-5. Year 6 will be at their beach fun day that day on December 8. The show starts at 10am and will finish near 12pm. A permission note will go home shortly. Please do not send any money to school.
Pupil Free Day - OOSH Open
Please be aware there is a Pupil Free day on Friday 11 November. Staff will be focusing on differentiation and gifted education and well-being. St Nicholas OOSH will be operating on this day for families needing this service.
Bunnings Fundraiser
Our SJKB Bunnings fundraiser is on THIS SUNDAY at Bunnings Glendale – thank you to those who are volunteering their time and also thank you to those who will come and buy a snag!!! The funds raised will go towards new laptops for the students, a laptop charging station, new playground equipment and library furniture. There won’t be any change from these purchases and the school will contribute to these purchases also.
Please meet at the BBQ at the start of your timeslot ready to either assist with the cooking, food handling or taking orders/money. We will have gloves for you and will be able to give you a run down of the dos and don’ts on your arrival. If you have your own apron, please bring it along.
I would like to thank Baker’s Delight at Warners Bay, Coles at Toronto, Budgewoi, Toukley and Warners Bay and a big shout out to GW Meats Butcher at Toronto (new Aldi) for their donations toward our BBQ items.
If you would like to come down to buy a sausage sandwich that would also be wonderful! We look forward to seeing you there – Bunnings BBQs are very tasty!! Tell your friends about it too!
Welcome Back!
Welcome back to SJKB the Whitworth family. Abby is now in Year 6, can’t believe it’s been 2 years since you were last here and now your little sister, Tilly is in Year 1! Lovely to see your beautiful family back with us.
Also welcome back to Mrs Ruth Cootes as our REC (Religious Education Coordinator) for Term 4. Mrs Cootes will have her office day on a Tuesday and will continue teaching Year 1B Wednesday, Thursday and Friday as normal. Mrs Tutton will continue to teach Year 1B on Monday and Tuesday. Thank you to Miss Taylor James (KB teacher) who held the REC temporary position during Mrs Cootes’ leave this year. Miss James will now continue to teach KB Monday-Friday. Thank you to Mrs Leah Hannan who taught KB during Miss James’ office day this year. As already advertised in last term’s newsletter, Miss James is our successful applicant as our fulltime permanent REC and classroom teacher commencing in 2023!
Lake Macquarie Council Environment Award!
At this week's assembly we were very pleased to welcome our local government Councillor Madeline Bishop and Council Education Officer Pamela Baker. Ms Bishop presented our school with the Encouragement Award an award for our continued commitment to environmental projects at SJKB!! Well done to everyone in our school community who continually engaged in environmentally friendly projects. Our school received $250 which we will put towards future projects. Cr Bishop told us that we received this award particularly because:
- For over 5 years your school has been working towards improving environmental sustainability, through reducing waste, conserving water and improving the school’s gardens.
- This school's water saving initiatives include installing rain water tanks, together with new water efficient bathrooms.
- Sustainable gardening efforts include productive vegetable and herb gardens, planting native plant species and mulching gardens.
- Collecting food and garden waste in your green bin, recycling, promoting low waste lunches in the school’s newsletter, and participating in the return and earn program, are all great actions to reduce your schools waste.
Classes for 2023
Other classroom structures will be communicated in a letter in the coming weeks when I can confirm class numbers. All families will be kept informed as soon as possible regarding 2023 classes and classrooms.
Tell Them From Me
Tell Them From Me surveys have been extended until 21st October. You have all received a Compass message last week from Catholic Schools Office explaining the extension. Thank you to those who have already completed the survey. These surveys are extremely important for future development and school improvements.
Dio Spelling and Maths Bee
Diocesan Spelling and Maths Bee new date is Thursday 3 November. Good luck to Kobe J (Stage 2 Spelling), Patrick D (Kindergarten Spelling) and Noah W (Stage 1 Maths)!
Visit to our Older Friends
We will be attending a nursing home visit on 3 November. I will drive the Mini Vinnies children to Teralba and hopefully make new friends at the nursing home, building relationships and sharing smiles and laughter during our visit. More details and permission notes will go home shortly.
Congratulations Mr Chandler!
Congratulations to our Mr Chandler who will be celebrating his wedding to his lovely wife, Ree, this term. We wish them both all the blessings for a wonderful happy future together. Mr Chandler will be on leave for two weeks from 31 October to 11 November (inclusive). Mrs Jodie Kelly will be teaching Year 5/6M during Mr Chandler’s absence.

Charlene Reid
Principal
Dear parents and carers,
We have had a great start to Term 4, and I welcome you back after your holiday.
PBL
Our Positive Behaviour for Learning focus this fortnight is ‘Make good choices’. This reminds us to be an excellent learner. When children are seen following this PBL, they can be awarded with a gotcha and recognised at assembly with a PBL award. The PBL links with our Making Jesus Real philosophy and reminds us to live and love like Jesus.
Our SJKB Clarity Journey
This term, we continue with our Leading, Learning, Collaborative journey with all staff participating in Professional Learning to improve our teaching practice. This model is based on the principles of Clarity, developed from Lyn Sharratt’s research studies on student achievement, into what works best in schools to improve student learning outcomes.
This term, our focus is on the following Parameter:
3- Quality Assessment informs instruction
In week 3, some of our teachers are attending a two day conference to deepen our undertanding of this parameter and the LLC approach to pedagogy. We look forward to sharing what we learn with all of the staff to improve our teaching practice.
Courtney Porter
Assistant Principal
Welcome back from what I hope was a relaxing and enjoyable break from school life.
This term promises to be a busy one with some exciting happenings planned.
Next week we will be celebrating Mission Fun Days!
On Monday 24th October our Kinder classes will hold a cake stall. Please send coins in with your child for them to purchase the yummy cakes and support Catholic Mission. There will also be time to visit our famous Teddy Bear/Fluffy Toy Cave.
Tuesday 25th October is our focused Mission Fun Day:
This is an out of uniform day and the children will need lots of small change for all the fun activities.
On Wednesday 26th October we will participate in the Soctober Penalty Shootout with our homemade sockballs. On this day, the children can wear “crazy” socks with their sports uniforms. Please keep in mind that all the money raised will help other children. It will be used to provide food, shelter, clean drinking water and education.
See extra information about Socktober and a YouTube link to how to make a sockball from recycled material.
St Joseph’s has a proud tradition of generosity to Catholic Mission and we are recognised nationally for this.
My best wishes for a wonderful term ahead,
Ruth Cootes
RE Co-ordinator
Socktober: What’s it all About?
Socktober is a program exclusively run by Catholic Mission and raises funds for programs benefiting children in the Developing World. Through the world game of soccer, students are motivated to take action for communities in need in Ethiopia and other places in the world.
It provides young people in Australia with the opportunity to lead in mission, encouraging them to think not only of what they will do to help, but why they will do it.
It is fitting that the iconic symbol of Socktober is a tattered, misshapen ball made of recycled material like socks, t-shirts and plastic bags, tied together with string. It’s not a conventional icon, but one that represents what Socktober is all about.
It’s this kind of ball that a young boy named Jorge Mario Bergoglio kicked around with his friends in the streets of Buenos Aires some 75 years ago. As he eventually rose through the ranks of the Catholic Church, becoming a priest, an archbishop and a cardinal, Jorge never forgot where he came from, and his love of soccer remained a constant. Today, he is known as Pope Francis, the first pontiff from a country from the Developing World, and his special connection with children from the world’s poorest communities is symbolised by the iconic sockball they all once played with.
As one of the main activities of Socktober, participants make their own sockball to form a connection with the children they support through the program. It reflects the ‘Head, Heart, Hands’ framework; when we can empathise with people in need, we feel even more compelled to offer what we can do to support them. The sockball helps students to understand the reality for children who cannot afford to play with proper leather soccer balls to which we are accustomed in Australia.
How to make your own sock ball
Before kicking your goals, check out our step-by-step guide on how to make a recycled sockball, with Catholic Mission's Dorothy Makasa. Many children in Ethiopia and around the world play with a ball just like this - even Pope Francis did as a boy in Argentina. Ready to make yours?
In Science we have been looking at how our food gets from plant to pizza, as part of the unit we made our own terrariums. We have been eagerly watching our herbs grow each week.
We have also been learning about how much sugar is in our food:
In Art we have been looking at the artist Kandinsky. Here is our interpretation of Kandinsky abstract art. Also students enjoyed the opportunity to interpret an image of a castle:
In RE we have been looking at the Beatitudes and discussing what living those values might look like. We decided that the Beatitudes is essentially about living with each other in peace and we created recipes for Peace Soup. Makes you think doesn’t it?

Welcome to Term 4 in the Library!

After that we need books returned as soon as possible for our annual stock take.
School Library bags are available for $14 for anyone who needs one. Simply pay on Qkr! and the bag will be delivered to your child in school time.
This year class borrowing days are:

Premier’s Reading Challenge
Congratulations to all of the students who put the effort into reading, having fun with books and completing the PRC. We will be celebrating with those students at our PRC Pizza Party. A note will go home this week for those 85 students who completed the challenge, inviting them to the Pizza Party in week 4. Please return your notes ASAP so pizzas can be ordered.
Dreaming with eyes open
As part of our Bookweek celebrations the students were delighted with a visit from the Author, Sami Bayly. Sami is an amazing author/illustrator who has created some fabulous Non-Fiction books about animals. She has had a book shortlisted by the Children’s Book Council of Australia for the past 3 years running. Sami inspired many children with her incredible knowledge, talented illustrations and her terrific sense of humour. All students participated in a workshop with Sami as she taught them to illustrate an amazing animal. Students were unanimous in their praise of her visit.
Book Week Competition - update
During Term 3 St Joey’s students were invited to participate in our Bookweek Competition. Well done to all of the students who submitted fantastic posters or pieces of writing. There were so many clever submissions. Here are some more entries from Primary students:
SORA
A reminder that Sora St Joseph’s has a subscription to SORA. Sora is an eBook and audio book Library. As part of the Australian Catholic Education Network (ACEN) member collection, your child can access eBooks and audio books through the Maitland Newcastle Diocese. All you need to do is to download the SORA app or go to the website and sign in through the ACEN membership, then you and your child can enjoy some terrific books on your devices at home. One of the great features of SORA is the inclusion of Graphic novels, Fiction and Non-Fiction books. Log in and explore today!
Happy reading!

Gifted and Learning Support News
Gifted Education News
This term our Kindergarten students will be participating in a range of COGAT assessments. As the Gifted Education Mentor, part of my role is to identify students who may be gifted in particular areas. The assessment is about looking at a student's reasoning skills, not about what they have learnt in class. The assessments are a screener tool we can use to help the process of identification and to plan for the students for the beginning of Year 1. I will be conducting the assessments
throughout Term 4 in small groups.
Learning Support News
Last term we celebrated the amazing work our wonderful Learning Support Assistants do during Teachers Assistants Appreciation Week. A big thank you to Catherine, Anna, Vanessa, Paulla, Worakot, Julie and Jenny who help all the students and teachers here at school.
Our core work here is to educate the students, but having the support of LSAs working in classroom alongside our teachers, and assisting students with a disability, ensures that all learners can be catered for. I am very proud of the Learning Support work we do here at St Joseph's and thank you LSAs for your dedication and wealth of knowledge you each provide to the students in your care.
In a few weeks, we will be having our Personalised Planning review meetings. This is the time when we reflect on the goals set earlier in the year and review and celebrate achievements made. Please keep an eye out for upcoming emails regarding meeting times.
Regards,
Monica Shanahan

The new format of our pre-loved uniform shop continues with items of clothing presented in a much easier way for purchase. New prices are:
- All “good quality” clothing - $5 a piece, except sports jackets, which are $10.
- All “ok quality” clothing is still a gold coin donation.
Of course we will always look after those families who need it the most.
DONATIONS ARE GRATEFULLY RECEIVED, so please check through your child's uniforms to see whether they are growing out of them and send surplus ones in to the school office (on carline drop off is fine). We particularly need larger sizes of good quality uniforms e.g. 12, 14, and 16. Thank you! A Lowes pricelist is attached to remind you of the cost of new uniforms. It's a reminder that PLUS runs a very cost effective service that supports our school.
To make credit card payment for your items, please download the Commonwealth Bank Qkr app (see school office staff for details) and choose
P & F - PLUS - Pre-loved Uniform Shop + New Hats
and type in the total amount for the items you are purchasing
A reminder there are two suppliers for new school uniforms, particularly as the children are in their winter uniforms now:
> Verdun Hiles have stocked St Joseph's uniforms since the school's beginning.
They carry a full range of stock except girls' shorts (they haven’t got the girls shorts in yet as they are awaiting a sample). The majority of their items are Australian made, resulting in a top quality finish. Also a good option when Lowes are out of stock.
> Call in and check it out. They also stock the same colour but thicker winter stock of girls pants than the Lowes brand. So if you want to support local, you have the choice.
> See Val at Verdun Hiles
> 88 The Boulevarde Toronto
> Ph 02 49591258
Also Lowes Glendale stock a full range. Some sizes go out of stock from time to time but we wanted to let you know that you may be able to get it at Verdun Hiles instead.
Lowes, Stockland Glendale - 20% off next thursday and Friday 4 and 5 August.

If you're looking for a particular uniform item, please try us first as sometimes we’ve had items with the price tags still attached. Please email direct to the P & F Volunteers on joeyspandf@hotmail.com or the school office admin@kilabenbay.catholic.edu.au and we will pass on your message PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR CHILD'S NAME AND CLASS in the message as our volunteers do not have access to the different family surnames to make connections to students - therefore please use your child's name as well as your name.
Thank you!

We have a number of students who have life threatening anaphylactic allergic reactions to all nuts and eggs. We would like to encourage families NOT to send these food items to school with their children or to ask their children to tell their teacher if they have brought them, so that they can be eaten away from affected children. We also encourage children NOT to share food at school.
