Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to SJKB's Week 6 newsletter.
Book Week!
We celebrated Book Week and Grandparents Day yesterday! A lovely celebration of our love of books and our love of family! Thank you for making this day very special.
Grandparent Visitors
Book Week Costumes
Refurbishment of Administration Building
Good news on the progress of our refurbishment of our Administration / Office block and our pick up and drop off zones at St Joseph’s is finally into Council DA! I will keep you informed of progress as it happens.
Kindergarten Living Things
Kindergarten had some very enthusiastic visitors last week to support Kindergarten’s unit of work focusing on living things. Here are some photos of our future vets with Harry and Jazmyn Reid (my Border Collies during their annual visit to Kinder).
Dio Reconciliation Plan
The launch of the Diocesan Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan. St Joseph’s hosted on the land of Awabakal People the launch of RAP. Our school leaders represented our school during the morning. Further information can be found on our Maitland-Newcastle Catholic Schools website
Science Week
A fabulous celebration of Science Week last week with "Professor Woollett" recreating many science experiments for your children to be involved with. Here are some photos of all of the great science experiments and activities the children were involved with:
Kookaburra Curtains
Our cheeky kookaburras, although lovely birds, they are pesky and interrupt the lunch times of our children. Therefore, we have installed what we refer to as “kookaburra curtains” to help us feel safe. Hopefully this strategy will be effective and lessen the chance of kookaburras swooping!
Debating Team
We are very proud of our year 6 debating team who participated in the Lakes Debating Competition at St Joseph's last week. So many different skills involved and hopefully our team have many fond memories of this day. Here are some photos of our team in action:
Bunnings BBQ
We have a date booked in at Boolaroo Bunnings BBQ on Sunday, 23rd October. All funds raised will be going toward the cost of a bank of new/additional laptops for the students and a charging station. Any further funds will contribute to new flexible furniture in our library! I will be sending out an invitation to all families who can afford an hour or two to assist us on the day. Your support will be greatly appreciated!
Father's Day Stall
Our Father’s day stall will be on Wednesday 31st August – all items will be $5. Please send your child to school with $5 (per gift) in an envelope or a snap lock bag LABELLED with their name and “Father’s Day Stall” on the packaging or you can pay on Qkr! under P & F Association.
A huge thank you to our parent volunteers for organising this, especially Bianca!
Father's Day Breakfast
Father’s Day breakfast is on Friday 2nd September! For the last two years we have offered drive thru BUT NOT THIS YEAR! We are back face to face and raring to go! Please order on Qkr! according to the invite that went home this week. Will you stay around for the before school hand ball competitions/games??? You are very welcome! The year 6 children beat the teachers – I wonder if they have the skills to beat our dads????
Netball Gala Day
Good luck to our netball gala day teams who are attending the Diocesan Netball Gala day on Thursday 1st September in Newcastle! We already have some wonderful news of three St Joey’s netball teams winning their local finals last weekend resulting in one team going straight into the Grandfinal and the other two teams into the preliminary final. Good luck and have fun. Keep these local competitions in mind parents if you would like your child to play when they come of age.
Kindergarten 2023
We are excited to meet out 2023 Kindergarten children and families once again on 6th September at our Kindergarten Orientation from 9-11am. If you have not enrolled as yet, please contact our office and Margaret or Susie will be able to assist you.
P & F News
Parents and Friends Night
I would like to encourage ALL families to attend the Parents and Friends Night on Saturday 10th September. Flyers have been sent home and a copy is shown below. All of the proceeds from the night will go toward resurfacing of the netball courts.
Our P&F are always improving SJKB in many ways including the new benches/sink being installed in the canteen, the continual fund raising for the netball courts “cans for courts” and now new line markings in our school hall to allow for indoor sport activities in the event of wet weather!
Thank you to everyone involved, some are also organising grants for our school from local agencies. This does take time and effort, however when we all pool our resources together it makes it easier for everyone.
Raffle
Thank you to those families who have sent donations in for the Parents and Friends Night Raffle. Our wonderful volunteers will be making up special hamper prizes from your donations as well as many other excellent prizes being available to win!
Tickets were sent home with your child last Friday. Thank you to so many families who have also sold all of your tickets. If you would like more tickets sent home, please ask your child to check with their teacher or email to admin@kilabenbay.catholic.edu.au and tickets will be given to your child from the school office.
God bless,
Charlene Reid
Principal
PBL
Our Positive Behaviour for Learning focus this fortnight is
‘Keep your hands, feet and objects to yourself’
This reminds us to be an excellent learner. When children are seen following this PBL, they can be awarded with a gotcha and recognised at assembly with a PBL award. The PBL links with our Making Jesus Real philosophy and reminds us to live and love like Jesus.
Our SJKB Clarity Journey
This term, we continue with our Leading, Learning, Collaborative journey with all staff participating in Professional Learning to improve our teaching practice. This model is based on the Principles of Clarity, developed from Lyn Sharratt’s research studies on student achievement, into what works best in schools to improve student learning outcomes.
This term, our focus is on the following parameters:
1- Share Beliefs and Understandings
6- Case Management Approach
3- Quality Assessment informs instruction
This week, Mrs Reid and myself had our Diocesan Case Management Meeting with 4 other schools in our diocese. We were able to share some of our success with the other schools and some of our system leaders.
A Case Management meeting is a formal decision-making meeting, purposefully built into the system or school calendar for follow-up improvement or instructional strategy suggestions. All teachers are part of CMM’s once a fortnight. This leads to a collaborative approach for addressing student needs and focusing on achievement.
Below is a student work sample bought to a CMM. A goal was identified, and instructional strategies were implemented so that the student could be successful.
STAGE 2 STEWARDSHIP
Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4) continue with their garden bed project this term and have entered in the Alambi School Garden Bed Competition. This involves designing, planning and growing a garden bed display with a sustainable focus. The event day is the 23rd of September and more information will be sent out shortly. Thank you Mrs Stewart for your ideas and green thumb knowledge and to all students in stage 2 who are involved!
Courtney Porter
Assistant Principal
Thank you to all who were able to join us for the Grandparents Day Liturgy yesterday!
The students were very excited to welcome you into the school and share the morning with you. Thank you also to Mrs Neems and 3/4M for organising the Grandparents' Liturgy.
Pope Benedict XVI’s wrote the following Prayer for Grandparents in 2008:
Thank you to our Mini Vinnies from the Parish!
I was very pleased to receive the following article from Moira Brauer from our Parish Ministry of Care recently:
Diary Dates for the beginning of Term 3:
2nd September: Father’s Day breakfast celebration
God bless,
Taylor James
Welcome to Bookweek!
What a fantastic week this has been for our students:
The Book Fair in the Library has generated lots of excitement as the students browsed the resources and chose some wonderful things to buy.
On Monday all students were given the opportunity to peruse items for sale and create a Wish-list to show parents and carers. The Fair began on Tuesday and many students, parents and grandparents visited during the week. Students were able to buy Scholastic books, posters and stationery. A reminder that our school receives a substantial commission on all book sales that we use to buy wonderful books for our school library!
Our Book Parade took place Wednesday 24 August. On this day all students and staff came dressed up as the Bookweek theme: Dreaming with eyes open
or a favourite book character or item. The students were super excited and looked amazing. There were so many terrific costumes.
St Joey’s students were invited to participate in our Bookweek Competition. Well done to all of the students who submitted fantastic posters or pieces of writing. There were so many clever submissions.
Here are some of the entries for Infants:
Infants' Classes were invited to design a poster to show your wildest Daydream. Here are some of the entries:
Here are some of the entries for Primary:
Primary students were invited to write a poem or short story about your Dreams for the future. Here are some of the entries:
Borrowing will return to normal in Week 7 as the Book Fair will have been packed away.
All students need a library bag to borrow from our Library.
This helps protect our lovely books.
School Library bags are available for $14 for anyone who needs one.
This year class borrowing days are:
Monday: Year 1, 3 Maroon, 3/4 Blue and 5/6 classes
Tuesday: Kinder, 4 Maroon and 2 Blue
Premier’s Reading Challenge
The PRC finished on August 19th
All student entries must be added to their reading records by this day to be included in the challenge. If you are experiencing difficulties with this please let me know as soon as possible.
Congratulations to all of the students
who have completed the challenge!
Wow! Certificates arrive at the end of the year, which is when we hold the pizza party.
Students who complete the challenge will have their names displayed in the library and the newsletter. At the end of the year they will receive a certificate to show their achievement. At St Joey’s we like to celebrate with a Pizza Party in term four.
Sora
One of the great features of SORA is the inclusion of a Premier Reading Challenge book section. Graphic novels, Fiction and Non-Fiction books are also available.

Weekly Awards
In 4 MAROON we are currently reading a wonderful novel by Morris Gleitzman called “Boy Overboard.” It is a story about the journey of a young refugee family forced out of their country and trying to reach their safe haven, Australia. We have definitely been able to see a very important issue from another perspective.
We have completed a character analysis of the main characters, identified the main events of the story and have decided on the main themes of the story too.
In our Visual Arts lessons, we have learned about an artist by the name of Wassily Kandinsky. We created our own concentric shapes artworks based on his famous piece, “Concentric Circles.”
In Science we are learning about how products get from the ground to our plates. We have built terrariums to grow some herbs. We eagerly await the arrival of our new plants!!

Learning Support News
A big Congratulations to Oliver on completing the Minilit Program - well done superstar!
We are also currently seeing huge improvements in the children's reading skills through our evidenced based programs and interventions. We have students participating in a wide range of programs including Speaking and listening intervention programs, reading and spelling programs, social and emotional learning, behaviour management and monitoring as well as wellbeing and zones of regulation programs.
If you are concerned about your child's progress in any area, please see the classroom teacher first and they can refer the student to the Learning Support team. We are here to help and support not only the child but the family as well. If you ever need to contact me directly, please feel free to:

Gifted Education News
We have a number of students completing interest-based projects across the school this term.
One of our students, Sienna, participates in the Virtual Academy program run by the Catholic Schools Office. Each year selected participants engage in this program and are asked to complete an individual project. Please look out in future newsletters for updates!
Happy Learning,
Mrs Monica Shanahan
Hello from the Pastoral Care space here at St Joseph’s. I do hope that you are well.
I am the Pastoral Care Worker two (2) days per week - Monday and Tuesday. If you ever have any concerns, questions or just want a chat then please feel free to contact me at 4959 1355 or melissa.dobosz@mn.catholic.edu.au
Pastoral Care is based on respect and dignity of every person. Pastoral Care grounds our school’s Mission Statement in the quality and care of our relationships. Pastoral Care is about a person’s sense of wellbeing, identity, and self-worth.
Here at St Joseph’s Primary School, we provide high-quality interpersonal relationships, care, and support to all.
Pastoral Care is supporting the emotional, social, and spiritual wellbeing of our students, staff, families, and the whole school community. This is done through offering support one on one to our students, group work, running programs and providing support and assistance to our families.
PASTORAL CARE HUB (ROOM)
The Pastoral Care Hub (Room) is open every Monday & Tuesday at lunch time for students to come in on their own or with their friends to just “chill”. This is a quiet and comfy space for students to do mindfulness activities, relax, draw, colour in, read, play a game, or just spend some quiet time.
The Pastoral Care Hub is a place to come and “just be”. It is designed to be a quiet, comfortable, safe, and friendly place for students to come when they do not want to be out in the playground at lunch time. The playground can be loud and overwhelming for some students. The Pastoral Care Hub is a quiet and safe alternative for students.
I am in the Pastoral Care Hub available to play games, colour in, draw, read, have a chat, and supervise the students.
Come join me in the Pastoral Care Hub!
Have a great week.
Take care
Mel Dobosz
Pastoral Care Worker
A few requests when ordering please:
- Ensure that each child's name is selected before choosing the order for that specific child. Then return to the beginning and select the next child to place the next order so that no more than one order is noted per child. Unfortunately at yesterday's carnival, multiple orders were placed against one child's name, so other children received theirs late as all orders were delivered to the sibling whose name was on the order.
- Please check each of your child/ren's registrations to align their 2022 class with their name.
- Please supervise the order being made on Qkr as errors have occurred when allowing children to use the app unsupervised, thank you!

Our Bus Timetables are available to download for your reference. Please note that we have simplified the bus numbers so that younger children are able to remember which bus they catch. See below for our Bus Number Table Reference:
The new format of our pre-loved uniform shop is going well, with items of clothing presented in a much easier way for purchase. New prices are:
- All “good quality” clothing - $5 a piece, except sports jackets, which are $10.
- All “ok quality” clothing is still a gold coin donation.
Of course we will always look after those families who need it the most.
To make credit card payment for your items, please download the Commonwealth Bank Qkr app (see school office staff for details) and choose
P & F - PLUS - Pre-loved Uniform Shop + New Hats
and type in the total amount for the items you are purchasing
A reminder there are two suppliers for new school uniforms, particularly as the children are in their winter uniforms now:
> Verdun Hiles have stocked St Joseph's uniforms since the school's beginning.
They carry a full range of stock except girls' shorts (they haven’t got the girls shorts in yet as they are awaiting a sample). The majority of their items are Australian made, resulting in a top quality finish. Also a good option when Lowes are out of stock.
> Call in and check it out. They also stock the same colour but thicker winter stock of girls pants than the Lowes brand. So if you want to support local, you have the choice.
> See Val at Verdun Hiles
> 88 The Boulevarde Toronto
> Ph 02 49591258
Also Lowes Glendale stock a full range. Some sizes go out of stock from time to time but we wanted to let you know that you may be able to get it at Verdun Hiles instead.
Lowes, Stockland Glendale - 20% off next thursday and Friday 4 and 5 August.

If you're looking for a particular uniform item, please try us first as sometimes we’ve had items with the price tags still attached. Please email to admin@kilabenbay.catholic.edu.au and we will pass on your message PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR CHILD'S NAME AND CLASS in the message.
Thank you!

We have a number of students who have life threatening anaphylactic allergic reactions to all nuts and eggs. We would like to encourage families NOT to send these food items to school with their children or to ask their children to tell their teacher if they have brought them, so that they can be eaten away from affected children. We also encourage children NOT to share food at school.
