Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to term 3. I hope you all had a well deserved rest over the two week school holiday period.
I would like to welcome new families to St Joey’s including those who commenced last term:
- Imogen (Year 3)
- Sofia (Year 5)
- Kyla (Year 5)
- Amara (Year 4)
- Archie (Year 5)
- Syler (Year 5)
- Ari (Year 2)
- Eve (3/4)
I am sure your teachers and friends in class have made you feel welcome at SJKB. It will be nice for the families to be introduced to some families in the future also. Perhaps at Welcoming Wednesday pick up our families can reach out and introduce themselves to any new faces! That’s what “Welcoming Wednesday” is all about!
Kindergarten 2023 and other Enrolments
We are currently accepting Kindergarten 2023 enrolments at St Joseph’s. If you have a younger sibling of current students, or know of any new families who would like a tour of our beautiful grounds please give them my contact details (charlene.reid@mn.catholic.edu.au) or contact our office on 4959 1355 for enrolment details.
We require a completed enrolment form, a copy of the birth certificate and a copy of the immunization certificate please. We are especially proud of the Successful Foundations framework we have embedded into our infants’ curriculum over the last few years. The children thrive through play-based learning, stretching their imagination, involved in problem solving activities, lots of role plays promoting their vocabulary, writing and number skills. We are a “hidden gem” here at 140 Wangi Road and we would like to share that with our community.
This is our SJKB QR code directing people to our Enrolment page on our website! That’s me holding up our extra large QR code!
Each week on our school facebook page there will be a sharing and celebration of our learning within each classroom or outdoor setting! Therefore each fortnight, it will be published in our newsletter also for those not on Facebook.
Thank you to those families who have included a google review on our St Joseph’s Primary School Kilaben Bay Google site. It’s so lovely to read such positive feedback! I know we have many great things happening at SJKB and I am hoping in a month or so I can share our plans for refurbishment of our Administration block! Our new playground in our natural playground space is now complete and all play spaces are open for the children’s enjoyment and play. Refer to newsletter No. 29 for some great photos of the equipment!
Religous Education Coordinator
I would like to congratulate our lovely Taylor James who will be appointed as our permanent fulltime Religious Education coordinator/classroom teacher commencing 2023 after our merit selection process!
Currently, Mrs Ruth Cootes is our fulltime permanent Religious Education Coordinator and still is gracing us with her passion in this role. Ruth has many years experience as an REC (since 2007) and has a wealth of knowledge of the local parish and community, RE curriculum, liturgy, charism and traditional Catholic traditions. Ruth always strives to make St Joseph’s an authentic Catholic Community that is always Christ centred and believes, serves and celebrates and still will even when not in the role as REC.
Ruth has decided to step back from her role as REC and extra co-ordinator responsibilities to spend more time with her family and grandchildren and we will celebrate Ruth’s contributions as REC at St Joseph’s toward the end of the year. The beloved Mrs Cootes has a huge following at SJKB with the students, staff, parish and parents and we would very much like to celebrate this.
COVID measures
Unfortunately we are back to strongly recommending adults to wear masks inside for at least the first 4 weeks of school by Catholic Schools NSW who gather and take the advice of NSW Health. As mentioned last week, we are continuing to be advised of children and families contracting COVID of late therefore I ask you to be diligent when observing your children’s health and only sending them to school if they do not have any flu like symptoms or high temperatures.
Decorate your School Gate Competition
National Child Protection Week 4th September
CALLING ALL PARENTS AND CARERS & SJKB STAFF - Save the date and get busy thinking of ideas to decorate our school gate to raise awareness for Child Protection Week.
WE ALL have a common goal and that is to nurture each and every child. This project/competition/awareness may be a great community event for ALL OF US to be involved in!!!! I would love to see a committee formed to get this up and running!!! Please contact me if you are interested to be involved (charlene.reid@mn.catholic.edu.au).
This year we will be shining a light on children growing up safe and supported.
To help facilitate a big conversation about how to create a supportive environment for every child, we are taking inspiration from the Australian Research Alliance for Children and Youth (ARACY) Nest domains. These domains help us to think about the many things that every child and young person needs to grow up safe and well. They include:
• • feeling loved and safe
• • having a positive sense of identity and culture
• • having material basics
• • being healthy
• • learning
• • participating
https://www.aracy.org.au/documents/item/700
NCSS: 3.5.1 Appropriate to the context or setting, the entity actively promotes and/or participates in civic engagement activities and/or campaigns which promote whole of community awareness of children's rights and child abuse prevention.
National Child Protection Week
National Child Protection Week will continue to embrace the overarching message that ‘Every child, in every community, needs a fair go’. This year will be shining a light on children growing up safe and supported.
National Child Protection Week will be looking at what works to keep children safe and supported… what children are telling us… what families are telling us… what the evidence is telling us… and how to translate this knowledge into action.
We know that too many children are not growing up safe and supported and that Child Protection systems are overloaded. There are many opportunities to change the trajectory for these children.
We can stop child abuse and neglect – and reduce its impact – by working together to make sure every child in every community has a fair go.
How does this all fit together? Increasingly, Australians are working together to keep children safe and well. Individuals, organisations and governments across areas as diverse as early childhood education and care, health, mental health, disability, alcohol and other drug treatment and prevention, domestic and family violence, justice, housing and employment.
Sneak peek: To celebrate and get involved in this year’s event school communities are invited to decorate their school entrances; Decorate your Gate! The winning school will receive an experience for the students.

PBL
Our Positive Behaviour for Learning focus this fortnight is ‘Be a Learner and Let others Learn’. This reminds us to be an excellent learner. When children are seen following this PBL, they can be awarded with a gotcha and recognised at assembly with a PBL award. The PBL links with our Making Jesus Real philosophy and reminds us to live and love like Jesus. In Stage 2, to consolidate this PBL, the students set Learning goals. Some of their learning goals are as follows:
- 'My term 3 goal is to create good friendships and get along with others’ - Ivy
- 'My learning goal is to be the best coder I can be’ - Lincoln
- 'My learning goal is to work hard in Science so that I can become an astronaut’ - Braxton
- 'My term 3 learning goal is to become a better writer’ - Shelley
Our SJKB Clarity Journey
This term, we continue with our Leading, Learning, Collaborative journey with all staff participating in Professional Learning to improve our teaching practice. This model is based on the principles of Clarity, developed from Lyn Sharratt’s research studies on student achievement, into what works best in schools to improve student learning outcomes.
This term, our focus is on the following Parameters:
1- Share Beliefs and Understandings
2- Case Management Approach
3- Quality Assessment informs instruction
The Assessment Waterfall Chart, as shown above, details the assessment process. We have implemented Learning Intentions and Success Criteria in all classrooms and are now looking at the next step, Descriptive Feedback.
Students should be provided with opportunities to improve their knowledge, understanding and skills through feedback that:
• is timely, specific and related to the learning and assessment intention
• is constructive and provides meaningful information to students about their learning in a variety of forms
• focuses on the activity and corrects misunderstandings
• identifies and reinforces students’ strengths
• provides information about how they can improve
• facilitates the development of and provides opportunities for self-assessment and reflection during the learning process
• informs future teaching and learning opportunities.
Here are some examples of how descriptive Feedback is given in student books:
We are reminded that in our School Improvement Plan this year, Leading, Learning Collaborative is reflected as a strategy to achieve our school learning goal o ‘By the end of 2023, there will be %75 of students at or above state level in Literacy as indicated by data’
It has been so rewarding this term to hear the excitement amongst teachers and children talking about their learning and how they are progressing. We will continue with this journey, working with Lyn Sharratt for the next 2 years as we further embed these parameters into our school culture.
Thank you,
Courtney Porter
Assistant Principal
I hope the term break went well for all families!
I wanted to write and let you know about some important feast days that are celebrated around this time each year.
The 26th July is the Feast Day of Saints Anne and Joachim. Anne and Joachim are Jesus’ ‘Grandparents’. According to tradition from the apocryphal writings, they are the parents of the Virgin Mary. The couple's faith and perseverance brought them through the sorrow of childlessness to, in their later years, the joy of conceiving and raising the immaculate woman who would give birth to Christ. It is said that an angel revealed this to Anne when he appeared to her and prophesied that all generations would honour their future child: “The Lord has heard your prayer, and you shall conceive, and shall bring forth; and your seed shall be spoken of in all the world.”
Anne and Joachim are recognised as the patron saints of grandparenting. Their feast day is a day to honour them and all grandparents for their contribution to our lives.
We will be inviting our students’ grandparents to a special Grandparents Liturgy, in conjunction with our Book Week parade celebrations, on 24th August.
On the 8th August we will celebrate the feast day of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop. Mary was the first Australian to be beatified by the Roman Catholic Church and the first Australian to become a Saint.
Mary MacKillop took her vows at the age of twenty five, and the religious name, “Mary of the Cross”. In doing so, she founded the congregation of the Sisters of St Joseph. Soon after taking her religious vows, Mary MacKillop founded several schools. Within five years of taking her vows and founding the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, Mary had established over thirty schools in South Australia. By that time, more than one hundred women had joined the Sisters of Saint Joseph.
Mary MacKillop was very conscious of the plight of the poor and needy. She worked with families that lived in isolated areas of Australia. As a result, Mary MacKillop pioneered a new form of religious life in Australia, and commenced a “system” of “Josephite” schools that would provide education to children in need.
Our school was founded by the Sisters of St Joseph and we take great pride in the Josephite charism. We are looking forward to celebrating Saint Mary of the Cross Mackillop on her Feast Day at the start of Week 4.
More information about Mary MacKillop’s life can be found here:
Diary Dates for the beginning of Term 3:
8th August: Feast Day of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop
24th August: Grandparents Day celebrations
2nd September: Father’s Day celebration
God Bless,

Welcome to Term 3 in the Library.
There will be many wonderful activities this term, as we will be celebrating Bookweek!
Bookweek runs from August 20 – 26, Week 6
During this week we will have a Book Fair in the Library. We will also celebrate with a Book Parade and an author visit later in the term. The Children’s Book Council of Australia has set this years Bookweek theme as:
The children have been discussing the theme and analysing ways it can be interpreted. They are very excited about our upcoming celebrations and looking forward to reading the Shortlisted books by Australian authors this year during Library lessons.
Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4) discussed Aboriginal Dreaming and how it is shown through artwork. The students then enjoyed creating their own artwork on gum leaves. The results were beautiful and gave the students a lovely sense of pride.
Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) and Kinder discussed how Aboriginal Dreaming stories explain creation. They listened to The Rainbow Serpent and discussed how she created the rivers, mountains and valleys. The children then created our very own rainbow serpent to hang in the library!
All students need a library bag to borrow from our Library. This helps protect our lovely books.
School Library bags are available for $14 for anyone who needs one.
This year class borrowing days are:
Monday: Year 1, 3 Maroon, 3/4 Blue and 5/6 classes
Tuesday: Kinder, 4 Maroon and 2 Blue
Premier’s Reading Challenge
The Premier’s Reading Challenge, also known as PRC is getting close to the end, with just under 4 weeks to finish it.
Congratulations to the 56 students that have completed the challenge!
The PRC is an initiative by the NSW Government that encourages a love of reading in students from Kinder to Year 9. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read widely and enjoy reading. Students are each given an individual username and password to log onto the PRC website. There they can add the PRC books they have read to their reading record. Students who complete the challenge will have their names displayed in the library and the newsletter. At the end of the year they will receive a certificate to show their achievement. At St Joey’s we like to celebrate with a Pizza Party in term four.
The PRC Website can be found here:
The challenge continues until 19th August, so there’s still plenty of time for children to complete it. If your child has entered the PRC in previous years their username and password will be the same. If you would like your child to participate in this wonderful event please let me know and I can send their login details home.

Year 2 Blue
Year 2 have settled back into school this term and are eager to learn! In Maths we have been further exploring place value. Here we are playing a 3-digit number card game using Uno cards. In Geography we are becoming familiar with the continents and where Australia is located. We love to practice our problem-solving skills with puzzles! We like to create using Playdoh and blocks; both these tools provide infinite creations during play! We also love spending time on our playground, particularly on the slides and using the creek the Shade area.
Kind regards,
Mrs Stephanie Baker
SPOTLIGHT on Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4)
Stage 2 Stewardship
Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4) continue with their stewardship project of restoring our garden beds with the support of Adrian and Dom from Cut N Edge. Last week they received education on how to keep plants alive in cold months and shared their ideas on how to make this space in our school more inviting and engaging. We planted broccoli, chilli, leek, carrots, lettuce, snow peas, spinach and more! We hope to use these ingredients to make fresh produce that we can all enjoy. Thank you again Adrian and Dom for giving up your time!
Stage 2 Excursion
On Tuesday, Stage 2 students embarked on an excursion to Newcastle to consolidate our learning of last term’s History Unit ‘Australia’s Original Inhabitants’.
The day began with a walking tour around Newcastle where he were historical detectives searching for evidence of European settlement. The blue skies remained as we explored Newcastle Foreshore discussing what it would have been like as an Indigenous person thousands of years ago. The students took part in an Aboriginal meditation experience known as ‘Dadirri’ where we were still and silent, reflecting and connecting with the land.
We were then able to visit Newcastle Museum, exploring Newcastle rich history of mining. The students saw a light and sound show which was very loud, but also very cool! We then participated in a scavenger hunt and viewed the exhibition in the museum ‘The Story of Newcastle’.
Thank you to Mrs Neems who organised the excursion and made sure everything went well - even the weather!
‘Our Excursion’ by Matilda and Ivy:
N- New experience for all of Stage 2
E- Exploring new places as historians
W- Ways to learn different things
C- Cold and windy walk but it didn’t rain!
A- Amazing view of Newcastle Harbour
S- Seen lots of convict evidence such as tools and primary sources such as the well
T- Two hour walk- no complaining!
L- lots of history along our walk
E- Exciting experiments and games at the museum
Thank you,
Stage 2 teachers

Welcome to Term 3 in the Canteen!
Term 3 = Warm Milo! Please look out for it when ordering your child's lunch on Qkr! Please tell them they will receive a ticket in their bag and can use the ticket to collect their drink from the Canteen. The same ticket system applies to frozen treats.
- Ensure that each child's name is selected before choosing the order for that specific child. Then return to the beginning and select the next child to place the next order so that no more than one order is noted per child. Unfortunately at yesterday's carnival, multiple orders were placed against one child's name, so other children received theirs late as all orders were delivered to the sibling whose name was on the order.
- Please check each of your child/ren's registrations to align their 2022 class with their name.
- Please supervise the order being made on Qkr as errors have occurred when allowing children to use the app unsupervised, thank you!

Hi everyone,
Following our cleanup by our wonderful volunteers and restructure of the PLUS a few weeks ago, we have a new price list:
- All “good quality” clothing - $5 a piece, except sports jackets, which are $10.
- All “ok quality” clothing is still a gold coin donation.
Of course we will always look after those families who need it the most.
To make credit card payment for your items, please download the Commonwealth Bank Qkr app (see office staff for details) and choose
Parents and Friends Association Menu, then
Uniforms, Donations, Fundraiser Tix
and type in the total amount for your items you are purchasing
A reminder there are two suppliers for new school uniforms, particularly as the children are in their winter uniforms now:
> Verdun Hiles have stocked St Joseph's uniforms since the school's beginning.
They carry a full range of stock except girls' shorts (they haven’t got the girls shorts in yet as they are awaiting a sample). The majority of their items are Australian made, resulting in a top quality finish. Also a good option when Lowes are out of stock.
> Call in and check it out. They also stock the same colour but thicker winter stock of girls pants than the Lowes brand. So if you want to support local, you have the choice.
> See Val at Verdun Hiles
> 88 The Boulevarde Toronto
> Ph 02 49591258
Also Lowes Glendale stock a full range. Some sizes go out of stock from time to time but we wanted to let you know that you may be able to get it at Verdun Hiles instead.
Lowes, Stockland Glendale - 20% off next thursday and Friday 4 and 5 August.

We have a number of students who have life threatening anaphylactic allergic reactions to all nuts and eggs. We would like to encourage families NOT to send these food items to school with their children or to ask their children to tell their teacher if they have brought them, so that they can be eaten away from affected children. We also encourage children NOT to share food at school.
