Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to Term 2, Week 6 at St Joseph’s (SJKB)!
Welcome!
You really are welcome to come onsite in the mornings! We opened up the invite a few weeks ago when COVID restrictions allowed parents and carers onsite. I understand we are all busy, however, it would be nice for more parents and carers to come onsite to drop their children off and attend morning assembly at 8.43am if time allows.
Uniform Policy
Thank you for the positive reaction to our request to abide by the uniform policy at St Joseph’s to wear plain black shoes/polishable black shoes. Your children look amazing, well presented and taking pride in their appearance in all other aspects and the lack of black shoes are letting us down!
Toasty Tuesday
Thank you to everyone who supported our beanie and scarf day on Tuesday this week! It certainly was cold enough! Thank you to our year 1 community for baking and supplying yummy treats for the cake stall. As a school community, we raised just over $300 which will be donated to those who will need support especially in the colder months of the year!
Catholic Schools Week Liturgy
Our Year 6 school captains attended the Catholic Schools Liturgy on Wednesday. I was so proud of each member and I am equally proud of our Catholic School community. As seen on our banner and our beliefs that Catholic Schools promote excellence PLUS MUCH MORE! You might ask, what’s the “more”… I believe the more is all about school improvement, supporting the wellbeing of the students and families at SJKB, improving learning outcomes, a focus on “learning” rather than “work” and trying to reconnect our school community after the COVID pandemic.
Congratulations to Sienna, Ghian, Ava and Cooper (Chyler absent) who represented our school at the Diocesan Catholic Schools Liturgy on Wednesday at the Cathedral in Newcastle. I am so proud of the student leadership team, not only our School Captains, I am also proud of the Mini Vinnies team and our Sports Captains too. You are all doing your school proud.
COSI (Continuum of School Improvement)
Next week (Monday-Tuesday) we welcome our Catholic Schools Office colleagues who will be visiting our school classrooms, speaking with students, staff and parents with regards to school improvement. This is part of our continual need to improve our delivery of quality education for your children.
Cans 4 Courts
I would like to thank you all for your generous recycling donations toward our “Cans for Courts”! I am also applying for a community grant with the support of our P&F Committee, Parish and Diocese to fund our need to resurface the netball courts. If successful, this grant with definitely speed up the reality of the new surface!
Welcoming Wednesday
Upon evaluating the “Welcoming Wednesday” afternoon pick up arrangement, you are invited to park your car in the top carpark to walk across the pedestrian crossing to collect your child outside the office on Wednesday afternoons. Staff will guide your children to this area for collection. If you are not there we will stay with your children until you arrive – please don’t stress if you are caught up!
Garden Improvements
A big shoutout to Piper’s (Kinder) dad Adrian, who is assisting us to develop “ The Farm” in our garden area. I look forward to sharing photos of the development with you along the journey. It all started today!
Adrian gave our Stage 2 children new garden gloves, shared great facts and got them involved in the first steps developing "The Farm"
Working Bee
We are looking into having a working bee (gardening, painting etc) very soon… we will keep you posted with proposed dates.
Congratulations to Sienna, Ghian, Ava and Cooper (Chyler absent) who represented our school at the Diocesan Catholic Schools Liturgy on Wednesday at the Cathedral in Newcastle. I am so proud of the student leadership team this year, not only our school captains, I am also proud of the Mini Vinnies team and our sport house colour captains too. You are all doing your school proud.
P & F Fundraising
A huge thank you to our dedicated team of parents involved in the current P & F Fundraising activities. Congratulations to Tex's mum who won the lolly guessing competition PLUS a Ticket to the Paint and Sip Night!
Tickets are available on Qkr! under the P & F section. Please give your support!
Paint and Sip Night
Tickets are selling fast to our P&F Paint and Sip night (see invite below) – be quick to register as there is only room for 40 people and only a few tickets left! This fundraising/social event will also be put toward the cost of the resurfacing of the netball courts. You are all welcome and you will find the link to buy tickets on Compass under P & F Fundraiser tix.
Movie Night
Canberra Excursion
Year 5 and 6 will attend their Canberra excursion next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. This excursion is always a fun time away with friends, lots of learning and sights to see! Thank you to Mrs Woollett, Mr Chandler and Mr Hession for taking time away from your friends and family to support this exciting time for our children. I will be in attendance for the Wednesday and Thursday also.
God bless,
Charlene Reid

Weekly Awards
Term 2, Week 5
Term 2, Week 6
Thank you to all the parents and friends who attended the Catholic Schools Week liturgy, last week, and joined us in our classrooms to see all the amazing work students are doing at school. Catholic Schools week is a great time to celebrate our school and the wonderful work our teachers do in making our school such a welcoming and enjoyable place for students to learn.
Catholic Schools Week also coincided with Reconciliation week. On National Sorry Day, together with Mr Hession and our Aboriginal and Torre Strait Islander students, we created a beautiful and respectful morning liturgy under the Cola in the form of a yarning circle. Surrounded by our natural outdoor environment and the noise of the native birds, we sat in circles facing our sacred space in the centre, it was a nice way to acknowledge National Sorry Day, Reconciliation Week and the traditional custodians of the land, the Awabakal people.
As the weather cooled down this week, many children (and staff) were very excited to wear their beanies and scarves on Tuesday to raise money for our Mini Vinnies Winter Appeal. Thank you to all those who donated soup and gold coins on the day! Year One did an amazing job making some very yummy treats to sell at our Mini Vinnies Cakestall! Thank you Year One! Over $300 dollars was raised overall on the day and this cash donation will go to St Vincent De Paul’s main office.
As our local St Vincent De Paul is currently in abeyance, the food donations this year were given to our local CatholicCare Community Kitchen in Toronto. The Community Kitchen is run by many of our St Joseph’s Church parishioners and just opened its doors last week. They are very grateful for the donation and will ensure the food is given to local people in need. For further information about CatholicCare:
https://torontoparish.org/community-kitchen-is-open-again/
I must also give a big congratulations to our school Mini Vinnies conference, who did a great job presenting the liturgy and running the cake stall!
As St Vincent De Paul’s Winter Appeal continues, St Joseph’s is also currently running a class competition, where classes K-6 are collecting 5c donations that will also be donated to their Winter Appeal. If you have any 5c pieces laying around at home that you are wanting to get rid of, please give them to your children to donate at school.
The class with the most 5c pieces will share in a bucket of ice blocks from the canteen!
Diary Dates:
• 28/06 – NAIDOC Week Liturgy
Have a wonderful week,
Taylor James
Acting RE Co-ordinator
Last week students enjoyed participating in National Simultaneous Storytime. (NSS). Students in schools across Australia participate in this event and this year read the book: Family Tree by Josh Pyke & Ronojoy Ghosh.
Our students enjoyed this gentle story that celebrated family, growth and community.
St Joseph’s has a wonderful collection of books that we encourage all students to borrow. They are currently enjoying our displays for Star Wars, Graphic novels, Mothers/Grandmothers Day, Anzac Day and Premier’s Reading Challenge books.
All students need a School Library which are available for $14 for anyone who needs one. Please pay on Qkr! and the bag will be delivered to your child.
PLEASE NOTE current class borrowing days are:
Monday: Year 1, 3 Maroon, 5/6 Classes and 3/4 Blue
Tuesday: Kinder, 2 Blue and 4 Maroon
We encourage all students to borrow from our library, as we have an amazing collection of fabulous books.
Premier's Reading challenge
The Premier’s Reading Challenge, also known as PRC is well underway
The PRC is an initiative by the NSW Government that encourages a love of reading in students from Kinder to Year 9. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read widely and enjoy reading. Students are each given an individual username and password to log onto the PRC website. There they can add the PRC books they have read to their reading record. Students who complete the challenge will have their names displayed in the library and the newsletter. At the end of the year they will receive a certificate to show their achievement. At St Joey’s we like to celebrate with a Pizza Party in term four.
The PRC Website can be found here:
The challenge continues until 19th August, so students have 6 months to complete it. If your child has entered the PRC in previous years their username and password will be the same. If you would like your child to participate in this wonderful event please let me know and I can send their login details home.
This fortnight during Library lessons, students have read the following PRC books:
Kinder: Family Tree by Josh Pyke and Ronojoy Ghosh
Congratulations to the following students who have finished the PRC:
Kinder: Ivanna M
Year 1: Vera H
Year 4: Lilly K, Martine S
Sora
St Joseph’s has a subscription to SORA. Sora is an eBook and audio book Library. As part of the Australian Catholic Education Network (ACEN) member collection, your child can access eBooks and audio books through the Maitland Newcastle Diocese. All you need to do is to download the SORA app or go to the website and sign in through the ACEN membership, then you and your child can enjoy some terrific books on your devices at home.
One of the great features of SORA is the inclusion of a Premier Reading Challenge book section. Graphic novels, Fiction and Non-Fiction books are also available.

Welcome to Term 2 in the Canteen!
Terms 2 and 3 = Warm Milo! Please look out for it when ordering your child's lunch on Qkr! Please tell them they will receive a ticket in their bag and can use the ticket to collect their drink from the Canteen. The same applies to frozen treats.
- Ensure that each child's name is selected before choosing the order for that specific child. Then return to the beginning and select the next child to place the next order so that no more than one order is noted per child. Unfortunately at yesterday's carnival, multiple orders were placed against one child's name, so other children received theirs late as all orders were delivered to the sibling whose name was on the order.
- Please check each of your child/ren's registrations to align their 2022 class with their name.
- Please supervise the order being made on Qkr as errors have occurred when allowing children to use the app unsupervised, thank you!
Volunteer Roster
Every helper is so appreciated and we extend our thanks to our wonderful regulars, together with the new volunteers who are just starting out. As with any volunteer position at school you must be registered.

Hi everyone,
On behalf of Plus we’d just like to thank everyone for your kind donations. In the last year we’ve made $1000 towards resources for St Joseph’s. To put that into perspective, we sell most items at $2.00 each (except jackets and tracksuit pants which are $5).
So we’ve sold approximately 500 items that have been donated by our beautiful families here at St Josephs. Without your support in making donations and buying from us none of this would be possible.
If you need an item, please send a text to Chris, details below. If you'd like to donate, please hand your bag of clothes to staff at the car drop off in the mornings or send to school with your child to drop to Margaret or Susie in the office.
I just wanted to remind everyone that there are two suppliers for our school uniforms, particularly as the children are in their winter uniforms now:
> Verdun Hiles have stocked St Joseph's uniforms since the school's beginning.
> They carry a full range of stock except girls' shorts (they haven’t got the girls shorts in yet as they are awaiting a sample). The majority of their items are Australian made, resulting in a top quality finish. Also a good option when Lowes are out of stock.
> Call in and check it out. They also stock the same colour but thicker winter stock of girls pants than the Lowes brand. So if you want to support local, you have the choice.
> See Val at Verdun Hiles
> 88 The Boulevarde Toronto
> Ph 02 49591258
Also Lowes Glendale stock a full range. Some sizes go out of stock from time to time but we wanted to let you know that you may be able to get it at Verdun Hiles instead.

Phone 02 4956 8570
If you're looking for anything, please try us first as sometimes we’ve had items with the price tags still attached. Text Chris - 0413 362 801 and PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR CHILD'S NAME AND CLASS in the message.
Thank you!

We have a number of students who have life threatening anaphylactic allergic reactions to all nuts and eggs. We would like to encourage families NOT to send these food items to school with their children or to ask their children to tell their teacher if they have brought them, so that they can be eaten away from affected children. We also encourage children NOT to share food at school.
