Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to Term 2, Week 4 at St Joseph’s (SJKB)!
Kinder 2023 Fun Day
We would like to invite you and any friends/family of yours to a “Kindergarten 2023 Taster Fun Day” on Thursday 2nd June. The purpose of the morning is to showcase our facilities here at SJKB, allow opportunities for children coming to Kindergarten in 2023 to be more familiar with our setting and allow their parents and carers to meet others and to watch their children adapt to a new environment. Please share this invite with any families who have a Kindergarten child who may be considering enrolling their child at St Joseph’s. When we confirm enrolments I will send dates for Meet Your Buddy Day, Orientation Day and three playdates as part of our transition to school here at SJKB!
Reconnecting Community
"Welcoming Wednesday"
There has been some discussions about bringing back “Friendly Friday” – for those not familiar with Friendly Friday, this was the afternoon parents had no other choice than to park their car, walk using the pedestrian crossing to collect their child from outside the hall. The purpose of this practice was to allow for adults to speak with and meet new faces and reconnect with familiar faces in our school community.
As we are aware our COVID restrictions forced parents to stay within their car which caused a lack of community engagement. Many parents are already onsite on a Wednesday for our Awards assembly at 2.20pm, therefore instead of “Friendly Friday” we are introducing “Welcoming Wednesday”. “Welcoming Wednesday” is the same practice as “Friendly Friday” – it’s just on a Wednesday instead.
Morning Drop-off
Our morning drop off Monday-Friday will remain the same. However, there is an option for you all to park and walk your children inside the school grounds through the double gates near the hall. You are welcome to stay for our morning assembly (8.43am). If you are staying for the assembly, please sit near the sandpit silver seats.
Playground Improvements
We have a new swing for the children to play on! We are still waiting for our new slides to be completed!
A fun day at the office!
Year 6 - Kinder Buddies
At the beginning of the week Year 6 had reading time with their Kindergarten buddies. Thank you Year 6, your buddies really enjoyed your enthusiasm! It is also a lovely promotion of reading and injects excitement into their learning.
ASPIRE Song Writing Competition
Congratulations to our Year 4 Maroon children who performed in the finals of the ASPIRE song writing competition. Their original song was also performed for our school at our Wednesday Award Assembly.
Congratulations to our award recipients. Please note, if your child is away for their award presentation the award will be presented at the following assembly.
Mother's Day Celebrations
We hope all of our mothers and significant women in our lives enjoyed their Mother’s Day breakfast and beautiful liturgy. It was a joyful occasion to see so many families onsite celebrating this special event.
Mother's Day Raffle
Thank you to Mrs Elbourne and her helpers for organising the Mother's Day Raffle here at school. We raised $215.50 for Catholic Mission to help families much less fortunate than we are. The winners of the raffle prizes were:
Nina R, Mrs Gebhard (Oscar), Mrs Walker, Genevieve, Charlize S, Harry W, Mia R, James R, Xavier Q, Mikayla, Mya and Patrick

We will share the handout on Compass. If you would like to contact Alicia, please email her at alicia.gibson@mn.catholic.edu.au.
Catholic Schools Week!
Next week is Catholic Schools’ Week – the theme is “Fully Alive”. Miss James has prepared a lovely liturgy for us to mark the occasion. All are welcome to attend – please read the RE Corner for further information. I have the opportunity to invite our school leaders to a Catholic Schools Week Liturgy on 1 June at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Newcastle. I am sure they will represent our school with pride.
Special Food Day
Next week we are having a hot dog special food l on Wednesday 25th May. Please ensure your Qkr! order is completed today or over the weekend.
Athletics Carnival
We all had a wonderful day at the Athletics Carnival. Thank you to Mrs Neems and Mrs Woollett for organising an excellent carnival. A huge thank you to all our parent helpers - the carnival rang so smoothly with your help and enthusiasm on the track, in the sand and in the canteen and BBQ! So many smiling faces on the day and sore muscles the next day from all the activities.
Cans for Courts Fundraiser
P & F Paint and Sip Night
Tickets are selling fast to our P&F Paint and Sip night (see invite below) – be quick to register as there is only room for 40 people and only a few tickets left! This fundraising/social event will also be put toward the cost of the resurfacing of the netball courts. You are all welcome and you will find the link to buy tickets on Compass under P & F Fundraiser tix.
God bless,
Charlene Reid
Principal
NAPLAN
Our students in Years 3 and 5 have been participating in the annual NAPLAN assessments this week completing reading, writing and language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. I am very proud of how our students approached NAPLAN and completed the assessments. Special thanks to Mr Chandler for his organisation and ensuring our ICT was working efficiently. Thank you to our families for supporting our students during this time.
PBL
This week’s PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning) focus is ‘I am responsible for my own belongings’. This contributes to our school rule of ‘Keeping our environment neat and tidy’. At SJKB we teach students the importance of being responsible. We encourage independence with unpacking and packing school bags, handing in notes, keeping lunchboxes organised and making sure they put equipment and other school resources away. Each week, your child is engaging in class activities and discussions to further understand and then implement these skills. Some students show great initiative with the school PBL and are congratulated at awards assemblies.
WALK SAFELY TO SCHOOL DAY
Now in its 23rd year, National Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual event when all Primary School children will be encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. It is a Community Event seeking to promote Road Safety, Health, Public Transport and the Environment.
All information can found at:
The event will be held throughout Australia on Friday 20 May 2022.
Because our school is not conducive to walking safely to school. All students will be participating in classroom activities to meet the following objectives.
The objectives of WSTSD are:
- To encourage parents and carers to walk to school with primary school age children and reinforce safe pedestrian behaviour.
- To promote the health benefits of walking and help create regular walking habits at an early age.
- To ensure that children up to 10 years old hold an adult's hand when crossing the road.
- To help children develop the vital road-crossing skills they will need as they become mature pedestrians.
- To reduce the car dependency habits that are being created at an early age and which will be difficult to change as children become adults.
- To promote the use of Public Transport.
- To reduce the level of air pollution created by motor vehicles.
- To reduce the level of traffic congestion.

ASPIRE Song Writing Finalists!
Congratulations to the children in 4 MAROON for reaching the finals of the ASPIRE Songwriting Competition. The children performed their song “Wishing Well” at St Pius X on the night of Thursday 5th May.
They can be extremely proud of their achievement and of their performance. Although they didn’t win on the night, it was great to hear one of the children say, “We consider ourselves winners anyway!” An attitude many of us could learn from!
Great work boys and girls and a HUGE thank you to Mrs. Pockran for preparing the children.
Mr York
Thank you to all the mums and families, who were able to come to celebrate Mother’s Day at our morning BBQ and Liturgy last week. It was a great celebration of the women we look up to and love!
The coming weeks are filled with more celebrations and liturgies:
Catholic Schools Week
Next week we will celebrate Catholic Schools Week 23rd – 29th May"
“One of the main purposes of Catholic Schools Week is to celebrate the remarkable work, passion, and enthusiasm our Catholic schools exhibit on a daily basis. As learning communities who are
committed to excellence through the education of the ‘whole child,’ we recognise their efforts in providing an all-round education that nurtures each student spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically. It is this education that enables all students to flourish and become the best versions of themselves. This year our Catholic Schools Week theme is “Fully Alive,” which reminds us that we are most alive when we are in touch with our inner selves and can acknowledge deep connections between ourselves, God, others, and creation. As communities of faith, we are called to grow in awareness of the life in and around us, to live more fully.” Ryan Gato, On behalf of the Religious Education and Spirituality Team at CSO Maitland-Newcastle.
On Monday 23rd May, we will celebrate the beginning of Catholic Schools Week with a Liturgy at 9am followed by open classrooms. After the Liturgy, parents and families are welcome to join their children in their classrooms to look at all the amazing work they are doing at St Joseph’s Primary School.
National Reconciliation Week
National Reconciliation Week will begin on Thursday the 26th May with National Sorry Day.
This year’s theme is Be Brave. Make Change.
Contemporary Torres Strait Islander illustrator, Tori-Jay Mordey created the above artwork to show the different faces of Australians working for a just and equal society – A visual reminder that reconciliation is everybody’s business. “I sought inspiration of what that kind of brave change might look like from many different people; people I know that are around me, people I see every day. And people I see living bravely every day in their own lives – from fierce little kids to older people working with more established mindsets and environments,“ Tori-Jay said. “We can make a change. But we can’t do it alone. Be brave and start the conversation today.”
We will have a Liturgy to mark National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week at morning Assembly on Thursday 26th May. All are welcome to join us!
For more information on National Reconciliation Week:
World Environment Day and Toasty Tuesday
Tuesday 31st May is World Environment Day, we will also be holding a Vinnies Winter Appeal on this day. Our Mini Vinnies Conference will be organising Toasty Tuesday
and invite students to wear a beanie and/or scarf to school with winter uniform and donate non-perishable soup items or a gold coin. The donations will go to St Vincent de Paul to help under privileged people in our local community. Our Mini Vinnies will lead our school in a liturgy on this day in the hall at 9am. Please join us on this for this occasion.
On Toasty Tuesday, there will be cakes for sale during recess and hot chocolate will be sold at lunchtime. Thank you for your support!
For more information on Vinnies Winter Appeal:
Enjoy your week! I hope to see you at one of our liturgies coming up!

Sacramental Program
We invite parents to start discerning the readiness of their child/children to continue their sacramental journey and begin formal preparation for the Sacraments of Confirmation, Eucharist and Penance. As a general guide, I would encourage parents of children who are turning eight or older this year to reflect on their child’s faith journey and consider enrolling their child in our Parish Sacramental Process. There is no hard and fast rule on age, rather it is much more important to discern where your child is at in their journey of faith. Signs that a child may be ready to begin formal preparation are:
- that they are developing a relationship with Jesus
- that they are asking questions about faith and are wanting to know more
- that they engage with scripture and prayer
- that they have a sense of God’s presence in their lives and want to follow Jesus
Parents who are interested in enrolling their child in the sacramental programme are invited to begin this process by attending a parent information afternoon on Sunday 5th June at 3pm in St Joseph’s Community Centre.

Congratulations to Decklan, Kaitlyn and Phoenix who represented St Joseph’s at the Diocesan Cross Country on Wednesday 4th May. All three students represented themselves, their families and their school admirably!
The competition was very strong and yet, each of them performed beyond expectations. Phoenix was great in his first experience at this level, Kaitlyn ran her 2km course in a wonderful 10 minute time while Decklan took almost 2 minutes off his previous best time.
Not only did they perform well on the track but the way they supported each other was amazing. Well done guys! We are all proud of you!
Congratulations
Mr. York
The children always enjoy coming to the Library during lunchtime. They are kept very busy reading books, creating pictures, playing chess, reading or participating in an online game on the computer and playing imaginative games with their friends.
A number of students enjoy reading PRC books and writing them down to contribute to their challenge list.
St Joseph’s has a wonderful collection of books that we encourage all students to borrow. They are currently enjoying our displays for Star Wars, Graphic novels, Mothers/Grandmothers Day, Anzac Day and Premier’s Reading Challenge books.
All students need a School Library which are available for $14 for anyone who needs one. Please pay on Qkr! and the bag will be delivered to your child.
PLEASE NOTE current class borrowing days are:
Monday: Year 1, 3 Maroon, 5/6 Classes and 3/4 Blue
Tuesday: Kinder, 2 Blue and 4 Maroon
We encourage all students to borrow from our library, as we have an amazing collection of fabulous books.
Premier's Reading challenge
The Premier’s Reading Challenge, also known as PRC is well underway
The PRC is an initiative by the NSW Government that encourages a love of reading in students from Kinder to Year 9. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read widely and enjoy reading. Students are each given an individual username and password to log onto the PRC website. There they can add the PRC books they have read to their reading record. Students who complete the challenge will have their names displayed in the library and the newsletter. At the end of the year they will receive a certificate to show their achievement. At St Joey’s we like to celebrate with a Pizza Party in term four.
The PRC Website can be found here:
The challenge continues until 19th August, so students have 6 months to complete it. If your child has entered the PRC in previous years their username and password will be the same. If you would like your child to participate in this wonderful event please let me know and I can send their login details home.
This fortnight during Library lessons, students have read the following PRC books:
Kinder: Ten little figs by Rhian Williams & Nathaniel Eckstrom
Congratulations to the following students who have finished the PRC:
Kinder: Eloisa D
Year 1: Finn C, Oscar C
Year 3: Oliver C
Year 4: Matilda B, Vincent C
Year 6: Sienna G

Scholastic Book Club
At St Joseph’s we participate in Scholastic Book Club. This provides families with an easy way to encourage your children to read. Twice each term students will bring home a catalogue of affordable and fun books that you may purchase. All money spent through Book Club benefits the school, as a percentage of money raised is given back to the school as reward points for the Library to purchase fantastic resources.
ORDERS DUE NO LATER THAN 13th May THANK YOU.
Happy reading,

Some information on the NCCD:
The National Consistency Collection of Data (NCCD) aims to ensure that all students with a disability (diagnosed or imputed) are supported at the level they require. There are four levels of support: quality differentiated teaching practise, supplementary (some tasks, some of the time), substantial (most tasks, most of the time) and extensive (all tasks, all of the time).
This week the Catholic Schools Office reviewed our practises and procedures for not only identifying students who require support, but also the management and methods used by staff to do this. It was reaffirming to hear that the many ways we support our students including the paperwork and evidence collected are making a difference!
As an example, we hold Learning Support team meetings fortnightly, we update our records often including Learner Profiles, evidence of assessed need, collaboration and we review adjustments made throughout the year.
In other news, intervention groups are progressing well, with one of our students saying to me "Guess what Mrs Shanahan, I think I can read now". It is so exciting to see and hear the children become proud of themselves and start to recognise the skills they are learning.
Regards,
Monica Shanahan

Welcome to Term 2 in the Canteen!
Terms 2 and 3 = Warm Milo! Please look out for it when ordering your child's lunch on Qkr! Please tell them they will receive a ticket in their bag and can use the ticket to collect their drink from the Canteen. The same applies to frozen treats.
We are looking forward to our upcoming special food day next week
Wednesday 25 May - Hot Dog Meal Deal. Ordering is available on Qkr! now. Please observe the requested cutoff so that we can arrange for supplies for the day.
- Ensure that each child's name is selected before choosing the order for that specific child. Then return to the beginning and select the next child to place the next order so that no more than one order is noted per child. Unfortunately at yesterday's carnival, multiple orders were placed against one child's name, so other children received theirs late as all orders were delivered to the sibling whose name was on the order.
- Please check each of your child/ren's registrations to align their 2022 class with their name.
- Please supervise the order being made on Qkr as errors have occurred when allowing children to use the app unsupervised, thank you!
Volunteer Roster
Every helper is so appreciated and we extend our thanks to our wonderful regulars, together with the new volunteers who are just starting out. As with any volunteer position at school you must be registered.

Hi everyone,
On behalf of Plus we’d just like to thank everyone for your kind donations. In the last year we’ve made $1000 towards resources for St Joseph’s. To put that into perspective, we sell most items at $2.00 each (except jackets and tracksuit pants which are $5).
So we’ve sold approximately 500 items that have been donated by our beautiful families here at St Josephs. Without your support in making donations and buying from us none of this would be possible.
If you need an item, please send a text to Chris, details below. If you'd like to donate, please hand your bag of clothes to staff at the car drop off in the mornings or send to school with your child to drop to Margaret or Susie in the office.
I just wanted to remind everyone that there are two suppliers for our school uniforms, particularly as our changeover to winter uniform is happening next week:
> Verdun Hiles have stocked St Joseph's uniforms since the school's beginning.
> They carry a full range of stock except girls' shorts (they haven’t got the girls shorts in yet as they are awaiting a sample). The majority of their items are Australian made, resulting in a top quality finish. Also a good option when Lowes are out of stock.
> Call in and check it out. They also stock the same colour but thicker winter stock of girls pants than the Lowes brand. So if you want to support local, you have the choice.
> See Val at Verdun Hiles
> 88 The Boulevarde Toronto
> Ph 02 49591258
Also Lowes Glendale stock a full range. Some sizes go out of stock from time to time but we wanted to let you know that you may be able to get it at Verdun Hiles instead.

Phone 02 4956 8570
If you're looking for anything, please try us first as sometimes we’ve had items with the price tags still attached. Text Chris - 0413 362 801 and PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR CHILD'S NAME AND CLASS in the message.
Thank you!

We have a number of students who have life threatening anaphylactic allergic reactions to all nuts and eggs. We would like to encourage families NOT to send these food items to school with their children or to ask their children to tell their teacher if they have brought them, so that they can be eaten away from affected children. We also encourage children NOT to share food at school.
