Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to Term 2, Week 2!
Last week was our first week back at school after our Easter holidays. I hope you had an opportunity to “be still” and enjoy the silence or was it laughter or did it include conversation? What ever your experiences, I pray you kept safe and happy and were surrounded by people who you love and love you.
ANZAC Day
Toronto March
On the Monday before we returned to school it was ANZAC day. Thank you parents and carers for bringing your children to Toronto for the ANZAC service and march. I know some of you had already been to the dawn service. There were many proud children wearing their Pop’s or Great Grandfather’s medals also. One of our esteemed parents spoke eloquently at the ANZAC service.
School Liturgy
Thank you Mrs Hannan and children for our ANZAC remembrance at school.
Welcome New Students and Families!
We welcome four new students to SJKB this term including Imogen (Year 3/4 ), Amara (year 4) and Kyla and Sofia (Year 5/6). Welcome also to Chase (year 1) who started with us last term.
We would like to welcome you to our school community and your families also. If there is anything you need please do not hesitate to reach out to us.
Continuum of School Improvement (COSI)
As part of our Diocesan system, all schools participate in a Continuum of School Improvement (COSI). This allows us to reflect on and improve our school practices. It allows us to gather evidence of practices we are doing well and identify areas we can improve on. Compliance each year involves the completion of reports in various areas including WHS, Governance, Facilities, Staff, Child Protection, Finance, Attendance and Safe and Supportive. We also have a Self Review and an External Review. It is a 6 year cycle and the Reviews come around every 3 years – either a Self or an external review.
In 2019 SJKB was involved in a Self Review, this year we have our External Review this term in June. Areas we are focusing on include Catholic Ethos: a culture that promotes learning and Effective Pedagogical practices. I will keep you up to date with our progress leading up to the review and post-review. There will also be opportunities for student, staff and parent voice during the review.
Diocesan Cross Country Running
Diocesan cross country was held yesterday in Maitland. Congratulations to Decklan, Phoenix and Kaitlyn who represented Lakes Region.
Athletics Carnival
As I noted on Compass and in the permission note, the venue and day has changed for our School Athletics Carnival.
All Athletics carnival notes should be returned to school please - ask your child to hand the note to their class teacher.
Please note, the change of date and venue this year to
Tuesday 17th May
at Fearnley Dawes Athletics track
120 Smith St, Newcastle West NSW 2302
800m runners MUST be there before the day starts – PLEASE READ YOUR NOTE CAREFULLY IF YOU ARE RUNNING THE 800M for children 8-12 years old as they will be transported by car in private arrangements with parents.
Each child's note has provision to nominate travel arrangements. Travel arrangements on the note must be adhered to and cannot be changed on the day. Please make your choices carefully.
Sausage Sizzle at Athletics Carnival
Sausage sizzle will be available on the day and P & F will be selling drinks. If you would like your child to have a sausage sizzle, please order on Qkr under school events.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
One of our Positive Behaviour for Learning is to “STRIVE HIGH” here at SJKB. To STRIVE HIGH encompasses the children’s learning, their interactions with others and also their appearance.
Please ensure your children attend school in the correct uniform including grey socks for Summer and grey stockings for Winter. Children with hair below their shoulders must have their hair tied back/up. If a ribbon is worn in their hair it must be school colours (maroon/sky blue). BLACK polishable shoes, if boys/girls are wearing their shorts (Summer) or long pants (Winter) they need to be the correct uniform item NOT imitations. I have noticed there are some non-uniform items making an appearance on some children. If any child needs to come to school with incorrect items they MUST have a signed letter from you explaining the need for the item to be worn instead of the correct uniform for a very short period of time. If you are experiencing difficulties purchasing uniform items, please contact me.
Student Awards
Congratulations to the children who received their awards last week. If your child is receiving an award (at assembly each Wednesday at approx 2:15 pm) I do email one parent prior to the day. I do try to give you time to organise your week if you would like to attend. If your child is away on the day of their award, we will hold it over until the following week’s Wednesday assembly.
Last week we also kept aside our Junior Boy Champion swimmer, Ajay and also the overall house colour Macquarie trophy for our Macquarie House colour captain.
Cans for Courts Fundraiser
P & F Paint and Sip Night
Our P&F Committee have also advertised a Paint and Sip night (see invite below) – be quick to register as there is only room for 40 people! This fundraising/social event will also be put toward the cost of the resurfacing of the netball courts. You are all welcome and you will find the link to buy tickets on Compass under P & F Fundraiser tix.
Aspire Songwriting Competition
Tonight our amazingly talented Year 4M will be performing their original song “Magic Wishing Well” at the Factory Theatre, St Pius X Adamstown at 6pm. Good Luck 4M!
NAPLAN
Next week our Year 3 and 5 children commence their NAPLAN. The children are invited to do their very best, not to worry about the assessments and know that their teachers will be with them to support them if needed. NAPLAN is a snapshot assessment which will hopefully show growth in your child’s learning from Year 3 to Year 5. NAPLAN is not the only form of assessment we conduct here at school therefore we are able to collect more data and identify areas of needs in individual children K-6.
Semester 1 School Reports
Your child’s teachers are already collecting data on the learnings in the classrooms ready for the Semester 1 reports. These reports will be sent home on your Compass account on Friday, 24 June (Week 9). All parents and carers will then be invited to attend your child’s parent teacher interviews during Week 10 of this term, EXCEPT for both Year 1 classrooms. Year 1 interviews will be offered Week 1 in Term 3.
School Fees
Thank you to all those families who have honoured their commitment to pay school fees. A reminder that school fees are billed in an annual lump sum at the beginning of the year to allow you to pay by instalments that you nominate so that your account is finalised by 30 November. Also, the Diocesan Pastoral Contribution will be added to Compass for you to either pay, partially pay or decline.
School Fee Statements are issued by email at the beginning of each month. If you have not received your statement or feel your Statement is incorrect, or you would like to ask a question, please send an email to admin@kilabenbay.catholic.edu.au and office staff will help you as soon as possible.
If you are experiencing genuine financial hardship in relation to school fees, as always, I encourage you to contact me to discuss options available to you.
Happy Mother's Day
Happy Mother’s Day to all our Mother’s, significant women in our lives and our Grandmothers. We hope you enjoyed your morning breakfast at SJKB, had an opportunity to see your children’s learning and play spaces and celebrated with us during our Mother’s Day liturgy in the church. The PLUS pre-loved uniform shop will also be open if you need some spare uniforms.
We hope you are all spoilt this Sunday and are truly recognised for all you do in the lives of your children.
God bless,
Charlene Reid
Principal
Welcome to Term 2! I hope families have enjoyed the break and students are ready for the term ahead. A special welcome to our new students and their families. We hope students will quickly feel at ease and settled at their new school and enjoy new friendships.
NAPLAN
NAPLAN is fast approaching and will be occurring for all students in Years 3, and 5 in Weeks 3 and 4 of this term. With so much work now occurring online, the Department of Education made the decision to transition all schools to NAPLAN Online in 2022 except for Year 3 writing. As a result, the NAPLAN period of assessments has been extended and will occur between Tuesday 10 May and Friday 20 May.
A NAPLAN assessment schedule will be sent home with students in years 3 and 5 this week. Thank you to Mr Chandler for assisting with the NAPLAN process, particularly the technology side! If you have any questions about NAPLAN, please contact me as the NAPLAN coordinator.
CLARITY
This term, our staff continue to remain committed to the Learning, Leading Collaborative journey, a diocesan approach to discover and implement what matters most in Learning, Leading and Teaching.
LEARNING INTENTIONS
Learning Intentions are clearly visible in each classroom. At recent staff meetings we have done some work around learning intentions and focused on the importance of co-constructing success criteria.
The learning intention emphasises what the students will learn, rather than what they will do. Our teachers share the learning intention with students and have quality conversation about their learning. Sometimes the learning intention is written on the board and shared with students at the beginning of a lesson or unit. In our classrooms we are endeavouring to make the Learning Intention explicit and visible to all students.
Often when we ask our children what they did at school, they often can’t answer. Perhaps you could ask them: ‘What’s your Learning Intention this week?’ I wonder if they could tell you! I’d love to hear some feedback!
PBL
Our school is a Positive Behaviour for Learning School. PBL is a whole school approach for all students supporting and fostering their behaviour, wellbeing and learning needs.
This approach focuses on explicit teaching and supporting positive behaviour for all students. It is an approach which supports students' own personal development as well as helping them to understand what is required of them in order to create a peaceful, productive and harmonious learning community.
Our PBL focus for week’s 1 and 2 ‘Honesty is the Best Policy’ This helps students become a respectful learner. We teach the students why honesty is important, and they have the opportunity to reflect on times where they have been honest or found it hard to be honest in their lives. This helps to make Jesus real as we continue to learn from him.
Have a lovely week,
Courtney Porter
Assistant Principal
Welcome back to Term 2!
I hope you all had a blessed and happy Easter!
On our first day back at school we finished off our Holy Week Remembrance. Easter Sunday is the most joyous event in the Christian calendar and on this day we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ from his tomb. I would like to thank all students and teachers involved in organising and performing throughout our Holy Week Remembrance. The respect that all students showed throughout our gatherings, whether they were watching or retelling the Holy Week stories, was beautiful.
The following day, 27th April, we gathered again as a school community to honour and remember those men and women who have died fighting for peace in our world. Thank you to Mrs Hannan and our students who will lead our service. Thank you also to Mrs Fuller for organising our school wealth and us to march in the Toronto Anzac Parade on A
nzac Day. It was lovely to see this parade happening again; and to see our students and families attending community events together again. Lest We Forget!
Wishing all mothers, grandmothers and mother figures that enter our lives, a Happy Mother’s Day!
May we remember those who have passed with joy and share memories, with a smile on our face and warmth in our heart.
If you are able to join us for the Mother’s Day Liturgy at 9am in the church on Friday, after the Mother’s Day BBQ, that would be lovely.
May Diary Dates:
• 23/05 – Catholic Schools Week starts
• 26/05 – National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week Liturgy
• 31/05 – World Environment Day and Vinnies Winter Appeal Day
Have a wonderful week,

Acting RE Co-ordinator
St Joseph’s has a wonderful collection of books that we encourage all students to borrow. They are currently enjoying our collection of Star Wars books, Graphic novels and Premier’s Reading Challenge books.
All students need a library bag to borrow from our Library. This helps protect our lovely books.
School Library bags are available for $14 for anyone who needs one. . Please pay on Qkr! and the bag will be delivered to your child.
This year class borrowing days are:
Monday: Year 1, 2 Blue, 3 Maroon, 4 Maroon and 3/4 Blue,
Tuesday: Kinder, and 5/6 classes
We encourage all students to borrow from our library, as we have an amazing collection of fabulous books.
Premier's Reading challenge
The Premier’s Reading Challenge, also known as PRC is well underway
The PRC is an initiative by the NSW Government that encourages a love of reading in students from Kinder to Year 9. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read widely and enjoy reading. Students are each given an individual username and password to log onto the PRC website. There they can add the PRC books they have read to their reading record. Students who complete the challenge will have their names displayed in the library and the newsletter. At the end of the year they will receive a certificate to show their achievement. At St Joey’s we like to celebrate with a Pizza Party in term four.
The PRC Website can be found here:
The challenge continues until 19th August, so students have 6 months to complete it. If your child has entered the PRC in previous years their username and password will be the same. If you would like your child to participate in this wonderful event please let me know and I can send their login details home.
This fortnight during Library lessons, students have read the following PRC books:
Year 1 & 2: - Anzac Biscuits by Phil Cummings
Congratulations to the following students who have finished the PRC:
Kinder: Alec T, Charlie W
Year 1: Luca T, James R, Imogen S.
Year 2: Xavier Q
Year 4: Paige S
Year 6: Mia R, Evanna S, Kaitlyn G, Roland P, Ava H, Matthew W

St Joseph’s has a subscription to SORA. Sora is an eBook and audio book Library. One of the great features of SORA is the inclusion of a Premier Reading Challenge book section. Graphic novels, Fiction and Non-Fiction books are also available.

Scholastic Book Club
At St Joseph’s we participate in Scholastic Book Club. This provides families with an easy way to encourage your children to read. Twice each term students will bring home a catalogue of affordable and fun books that you may purchase. All money spent through Book Club benefits the school, as a percentage of money raised is given back to the school as reward points for the Library to purchase fantastic resources.

Welcome to Term 2 in the Canteen!
We are looking forward to our upcoming special food day - save the date in Week 5 for Wendesday 25 May - more details to come.
- Ensure that each child's name is selected before choosing the order for that specific child. Then return to the beginning and select the next child to place the next order so that no more than one order is noted per child.
- Please check each of your child/ren's registrations to align their 2022 class with their name.
- Please supervise the order being made on Qkr as errors have occurred when allowing children to use the app unsupervised, thank you!

We have a number of students who have life threatening anaphylactic allergic reactions to all nuts and eggs. We would like to encourage families NOT to send these food items to school with their children or to ask their children to tell their teacher if they have brought them, so that they can be eaten away from affected children. We also encourage children NOT to share food at school.
