Dear Parents and Carers,
Week 9 is upon us! This term is an 11 week term with our last day being Friday 8 April and we return on Tuesday 26th April. This is the day after ANZAC day. This year our school community will be invited to attend the ANZAC march on 25th April at Toronto. You will receive further information shortly. It would be lovely to see as many families in attendance on this day where we will lay a wreath during the ceremony. I do ask that all children wear their school uniform for the march please.
This is the last newsletter of Term 1, however, I will continue to share important information on Compass.
Wellbeing
This week is “Wellbeing and National check in week”. The Maitland-Newcastle Diocese has launched “Wellbeing Together”. Student wellbeing refers to a positive sense of self and belonging and the skills to make positive and healthy choices to support learning and achievement, provided in a safe and accepting environment for all students. Student wellbeing encompasses the multi-dimensional and interconnected domains of cognitive, emotional, social, physical, and spiritual wellbeing. Your children will participate in at least one wellbeing activity within their classrooms this week.
I have shared on Compass the Brave Program for you to unpack - it's a worthwhile program. We will also offer a parent session next term with our School Psychologist Alicia Gibson, details to be advised.
Student Awards
Congratulations to our award recipients in Week 8! It is always lovely to hear the reasons why our champions receive their awards each week.

Benefits from P & F Fundraising
We are “sprucing up” our canteen with new signage, new SJKB aprons and a new cake display cabinet for displaying treats for sale. Thank you to our P&F Committee for funding these improvements. We will also be looking into new benchtops and sinks inside the canteen – if this is your expertise, I would be very interested in hearing from you because I have not secured a business to perform these works.
The P & F have also funded many whole school purchases including new house colour flags. You will find the older flags displayed in our hall when you visit! Further purchases include new trophies and signage on our teacher hi-viz vests displaying our SJKB expectations. Thank you for your ongoing support and thank you to our whole school community for getting involved in our fundraising activities to make these purchases happen.
St Joseph's Feast Day
We had a great time celebrating St Joseph’s Feast Day last week
by playing “olden day” games, we had a pizza lunch and a beautiful liturgy in our church.
We also held our inaugural St Joseph’s Art Competition. Here are our winning artworks from each class.
These art works were displayed in our church over the weekend for St Joseph’s Day and will now be displayed in their frames in our foyer for a year until our 2023 St Joseph’s Day Art Competition! Congratulations to:
Ethan H (KB), Evie M (KM), Emma R (1B), Vera H (1M), Anolah-Rose (2B), Audrey T (3M), Eve B (3/4B), Matilda B (4M), Lucas B (5/6M) and Ajay J (5/6B)!

Pupil Free Day Reminder
Tomorrow (Friday, 25 March) is a pupil free day. Our staff will be offsite participating in an Aboriginal Spirituality Day.
School Cross Country Running
On Monday, 28th March, we will be running our school cross country. Mrs Woollett has sent a note home to all our primary classes and any Year 2 child turning 8 this year who would like to participate. All children will need to return their notes asap and bring any asthma puffers with them for the duration of the run.
Big Write Activity
One of our focuses has been around writing! Teachers meet regularly during case management meetings to discuss individual writing samples K-6. These meetings allow teachers to share their expertise and teaching strategies to develop quality learning experiences for their classrooms. On Tuesday 29 March all children Year 1-6 will participate in their BIG WRITE activity and Kindergarten will participate in their BIG TALK activity!
Year 7, 2022
Monday, 4th April is St Paul’s Catholic College, Booragul information evening! Year 6 children were handed a pack today in relation to enrolment at St Paul's Booragul.
P & F Meeting
Tuesday, 5th April we have our P & F meeting here at St Joseph’s library at 6.30pm – all welcome! Remember that you are automatically a member of the P & F as a parent or carer of a St Joseph's student.
Easter Egg Donations
A big thank you to St Joseph's families! The out of uniform day was a fun day for the children and we are blessed by your generosity. If you'd like to send any more donations in, please do so next week as “Wrapping“ day will be on Thursday, 31st March at school. ALL PARENTS / CARERS WELCOME, many hands make light work – come and have a coffee with your fellow volunteers from our new coffee machine!
Easter Hat Parade - 7th April and
Easter Egg Raffle, Colouring Competition
Our Easter egg raffle will be drawn on the same day as our Easter Hat parade on Thursday 7th April. An exciting addition to our raffle / parade day will be a colouring in competition component - further details to be provided next week, when tickets for the raffle will also become available.
The parade will be through the grounds of our school (outside if weather permits) at 1.15pm followed by the raffle and colouring in competition prizes. Parents and carers are welcome to attend. Your child is requested to make their hat at home and bring to school on the morning of 7th April.
Bus Route 9 update
Our new bus route, “Bus 9” is ever growing in popularity - a success for families living in the Speers Point, Teralba, Billy’s Lookout and also using the stop at St Paul’s, Booragul. We have now upsized to this bus so we can also cater for St Paul’s students needing this service. The front of the bus should have “St Joseph’s/ St Paul’s” displayed. We greatly appreciate the free travel the Catholic Schools Office has provided.
Enrolment Information Evening
Our new Enrolments K-6 Information evening on Wednesday, 23 March was wonderful. It was lovely to meet new families who wish to enrol at our great school. Our staff set up information tables in our hall and staff and student leaders conducted tours of the school. Here are some pictures of the great displays arranged by our dedicated staff:
If you know of any families interested in enrolling their children at SJKB, please let them know that enrolment forms are available at the school office. Also if you have a younger child ready for Kindergarten next year, you need to complete an enrolment form for them as soon as possible and return to the school office. Simply email to our admin@kilabenbay.catholic.edu.au and we will send the pack home for you with your older child.
Harmony Day
Please have a read about our St Joseph's Harmony Day organisation. Here is a link for you to complete if you are able to participate:
https://forms.office.com/r/kX8awuvAah
Harmony Day
Harmony Day celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. In schools, we celebrate inclusiveness, respect, and a sense of belonging for all Australians, from the traditional owners of the land to those who have come from many countries around the world. Harmony Day occurs on 21 March each year and coincides with the United Nations' International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
The ongoing theme of Harmony Day is ‘Everyone Belongs’. It is a day of cultural respect for all. By participating in Harmony Day activities, we can learn and understand how all Australians equally belong to this nation and enrich it. This year, we will be celebrating Harmony Day on Wednesday 30 March. Students will be able to wear cultural costumes OR orange clothing which is the colour associated with Harmony Day. Sushi will be available as a meal deal from the canteen. There will also be class activities including a class photo booth where students can display international greeting signs.
Thank you to Mrs Dionne Mitchell, EALD Teacher for organising Harmony Day!
Attendance Notes in Compass
Compass has the ability to accept notes from parents for full day absences only on your child's attendance record. For late arrivals or early pick ups please use the kiosk in reception. Please do not add partial day absence notes for appointments in Compass on your phone.
School Fees (reminder)
School Fee Statements were emailed to the feepayer nominated on your enrolment form on 3 March. Each family nominated a payment frequency, with the first payment being due before 31 March 2022. Please ensure you have set up your online payments to reflect your payment promise.
If you have not received your Statement, please send an email to admin@kilabenbay.catholic.edu.au or call our school office between 8:30 am and 3:00pm to discuss. If you are experiencing genuine hardship in relation to payment of your fees, please call the school office to make an appointment to see me.
Please note that as we have moved to the new system fully, it only allows for one lump sum "Resource Fee" to be shown, which is the sum of the General Service Fee and Technology Fee I previously explained in my letter sent out in February and posted on Compass by Margaret Livingstone (still visible in the news feed). The system is set If you need further information, please contact the school office.
Holy Week
During Week 11 we will be praying special prayers for Holy Week.
Happy Easter
You might need a couple of weeks holidays to recover from a busy end of term! Thank you for your continued support and cooperation during this term and I pray that you all have a lovely Easter and holiday break.
God Bless,
Charlene Reid
Principal
PBL
Our Positive Behaviour for Learning focus this fortnight is ‘Respect Property of School and Others’. This reminds us to keep our environment clean and tidy. When children are seen following this PBL, they can be awarded with a gotcha and recognised at assembly with a PBL award. The PBL links with our Making Jesus Real philosophy and reminds us to live and love like Jesus.
Our SJKB Clarity Journey
In 2021, SJKB commenced a journey to implement an in-depth system-wide model of professional learning and classroom teaching practices. This model is based on the principles of Clarity, developed from Lyn Sharratt’s research studies on student achievement, into what actually works best in schools to improve student learning outcomes.
Clarity is based around the belief that every student can learn. Lyn Sharratt has developed 14 Parameters that unwrap the core tenets of successful School Improvement Processes. Her research with Michael Fullan (2009, 2012) established that when these 14 Parameters are present at high levels, in systems and schools where leaders are focused on them, there were increased levels of student growth and achievement. These parameters can be seen in the diagram below.
This term, our Clarity Focus is to have students understand and use learning intentions and success criteria to help them articulate their learning and progress.
Learning Intentions are descriptions of what learners should know, understand and be able to do by the end of a lesson or a unit of work. Learning intentions are the basis for tracking student progress, providing feedback and assessing achievement.
Success criteria are the measures used to determine whether, and how well, learners have met the learning intentions. Success Criteria are co-constructed with the students so that they become self-directed and engaged learners. Below are some examples of Learning Intentions and Success Criteria visible in each classroom (ES1 is Early Stage 1 - Kindergarten) (Stage 1 is Years 1 and 2), (Stage 2 is Years 3 and 4) (Stage 3 is Years 5 and 6)
By using learning intentions and success criteria we are seeking to support students in being able to articulate what they are learning. We believe by using these, teachers are explicitly supporting students to focus on the learning/understanding/skill, rather than the ‘doing’ of the task or activity. To find out more, be sure to speak with your classroom teacher.
In our School Improvement Plan this year, we have also included Learning Intentions and Success Criteria as a strategy to achieve our smart goal of ‘By the end of 2023, there will be %75 of students at or above state level in Literacy as indicated by data.
In Week 11, Mrs Reid, Mrs Neems, Mrs Woolett and myself will be attending a three-day Professional Development with Lyn Sharratt and other schools from our diocese to further embed these parameters in our school.
It has been so rewarding this term to hear the excitement amongst teachers and children talking about their learning and how they are progressing. We will continue with this journey, working with Lyn Sharratt for the next 2 years as we further embed these parameters into our school culture. I would encourage you to talk with your children about Learning Intentions & Success Criteria to reflect and improve on their work.
Thank you!
Congratulations on ending Term 1 positively and successfully. Thank you to the SJKB community for welcoming me into your school. I wish you all a restful and relaxing holiday and look forward to seeing you as we begin Term 2 together!
Thank you,
Courtney Porter, Assistant Principal.
The Andrew Chinn incursion was a hit with the kids! They loved learning the actions and lyrics to many of his songs! Andrew was a teacher in Catholic schools for over 20 years but has now released 11 CDs, 6 picture books and 5 DVDs. Many of his songs can be found on Youtube and Spotify, so ask your children what songs they sung at school and you may be able to have your own little concert at home.
On Friday, staff will attend an Aboriginal Spirituality Day where we will discuss our own faith journeys; how to support the many faith journeys our students are on and how we can connect it to this beautiful Awabakal land where our school was built. We will also meet with Uncle Warren, who will walk us to the Baiame Caves and talk to us about his, and other local aboriginal peoples, deep connection to this land. It will be a beautiful way to deepen our faith and understandings of the land we walk on.
We have past the halfway point of our Lenten journey this week. When Lent began, Pope Francis asks us to continue to do more through ‘sowing seeds of goodness’ and connect to others around us. With Covid continuing to stick around, I know for me personally, it’s sometimes hard to intentionally take the time to sow and nurture these seeds. I have enjoyed organising liturgies in the church, where the whole school, parents and carers can attend and also connecting with parents at our welcome BBQ. I hope more events can continue to happen that strengthen our school community and faith journey.
On this note, the Easter hat parade will be open for parents and carers to attend on the 7th April at 1:15 pm. Looking forward to seeing you there, if you have the opportunity to attend.
Many blessings for the week ahead,
Taylor James
Acting RE Co-ordinator
Welcome to 2022 in St Joseph’s Library.
We have begun another great year of reading, researching and exploring some fantastic technology. Students have been learning about Cybersafety and how to stay safe on the Internet.
St Joseph’s has a wonderful collection of books that we encourage all students to borrow. They are currently enjoying our collection of Star Wars books, Graphic novels and Premier’s Reading Challenge books.
All students need a library bag to borrow from our Library. This helps protect our lovely books.
School Library bags are available for $14 for anyone who needs one. Kinder students do not have to buy a bag, as the school will provide them one as part of their kinder acceptance fee. Please pay on Qkr! and the bag will be delivered to your child.
This year class borrowing days are:
Monday: Year 1, 2 Blue, 3 Maroon, 4 Maroon and 3/4 Blue,
Tuesday: Kinder, and 5/6 classes
We encourage all students to borrow from our library, as we have an amazing collection of fabulous books.
Kinder Maroon enjoyed spending time exploring Junior Fiction books during their library lesson last week:
Premier's Reading challenge
The Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) began Monday
February 28th.
The PRC is an initiative by the NSW Government that encourages a love of reading in students from Kinder to Year 9. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read widely and enjoy reading. Students are each given an individual username and password to log onto the PRC website. There they can add the PRC books they have read to their reading record. Students who complete the challenge will have their names displayed in the library and the newsletter. At the end of the year they will receive a certificate to show their achievement. At St Joey’s we like to celebrate with a Pizza Party in term four.
The PRC Website can be found here:
The challenge continues until 19th August, so students have 6 months to complete it. If your child has entered the PRC in previous years their username and password will be the same.
This term during Library lessons, students have read the following PRC books:
Kinder - I Went Walking by Sue Machin,
Too Many Elephants in this House by Ursula Dubosarsky,
Mr McGee and the Big Bag of Bread by Pamela Allen
Year 1 & 2 - Banjo and Ruby Red by Libby Gleeson
Sora
St Joseph’s has a subscription to SORA. Sora is an eBook and audio book Library. As part of the Australian Catholic Education Network (ACEN) member collection, your child can access eBooks and audio books through the Maitland Newcastle Diocese. All you need to do is to download the SORA app or go to the website and sign in through the ACEN membership, then you and your child can enjoy some terrific books on your devices at home.
One of the great features of SORA is the inclusion of a Premier Reading Challenge book section. Graphic novels, Fiction and Non-Fiction books are also available.
Log in and explore today.
Scholastic Book Club
At St Joseph’s we participate in Scholastic Book Club. This provides families with an easy way to encourage your children to read. Twice each term students will bring home a catalogue of affordable and fun books that you may purchase. All money spent through Book Club benefits the school, as a percentage of money raised is given back to the school as reward points for the Library to purchase fantastic resources. ORDERS DUE NO LATER THAN 30 MARCH THANK YOU.
Happy reading,
Leah Hannan

Learning Support
This term is flying by!!
Thank you so much to all the wonderful Learning Support Assistants who have helped the children settle into school this year so well. We have a big job and it is very rewarding but sometimes it is challenging too, so thank you for your support during the highs and lows of school life!
Our Learning Support team meet fortnightly to discuss any concerns and to discuss students who require support under the NCCD.
If you are concerned about your child and their learning in any area - social, emotional, cognitive, behaviour etc , our team are here to support you, your child and your family.
We have many students at our school who require support and our school community is based on inclusive education and best practise.
I have recently been speaking with two students (Mae and Scarlett) from Year 6 who said to me when I asked them if St Joseph's is inclusive, they said:
"St Joseph's is exactly the school motto - Love One Another" and I couldn't have said it better myself! I am very proud to work in such an inclusive environment where all children matter and all children are valued. So, thank you parents for working with us as a team to best support your child!
Walk for Autism
Beginning next week, some of our staff members will be participating in the initiative by ASPECT called "Walk for Autism".
Autism is a lifelong condition. An estimated 1 in every 70 people in Australia is on the autism spectrum. Along with their family members, this means autism is a part of daily life for over a million Australians. It is likely that one or more of your classmates or students are dealing with the everyday challenges that an autism diagnosis brings.
If you or your child would like to join our team and help raise awareness and funds, please click on the link below.
https://www.walkforautism.org.au/fundraisers/SJKB
By taking part in Walk for Autism, you create an opportunity to discuss Autism within the school environment and to generate understanding of how we can all be more inclusive of classmates and students on the Autism Spectrum.

WELLBEING WEEK AND NATIONAL CHECK IN WEEK
This week is Wellbeing Week and National Check in Week. Last Thursday, the Catholic Schools Office launched the new 2022 CSO (Catholic Schools Office) Student Wellbeing and Pastoral Care Policy and Framework called “Wellbeing Together”- Student wellbeing and learning across the whole school.
The three (3) major aspects of the new policy and framework are- I feel safe, supported, and included. I am connected, creative and engaged and I can lead, learn, and thrive.
Student Wellbeing- Refers to a positive sense of self and belonging and the skills to make positive and healthy choices to support learning and achievement, provided in a safe and accepting environments for all students. Students' wellbeing encompasses the multi-dimensional and interconnected domains of cognitive, emotional social, physical, and spiritual wellbeing.
To coincide with this exciting time, each class is completing a daily “Wellbeing Activity” this week to support the wellbeing of each student. These activities range from Gratitude Jar, Mindfulness activity, 5 support people, Rainbow Affirmations and What I love about myself.
Supporting the wellbeing of children and young people is an important part of what students, families and schools do every day. It is especially important to ensure that children and young people’s wellbeing is looked after in times of uncertainty and stress. Supporting wellbeing not only helps children and young people to feel happier and less anxious, and it will also help them to have positive interactions with others and to learn more effectively.
You can find some great wellbeing, relaxation, and calming tips on these websites-
Wishing you a lovely week

We have a number of students who have life threatening anaphylactic allergic reactions to all nuts and eggs. We would like to encourage families NOT to send these food items to school with their children or to ask their children to tell their teacher if they have brought them, so that they can be eaten away from affected children. We also encourage children NOT to share food at school.
